girl names

Hello, I'm 10 weeks so PLENTY of time to think about this, but I like contemplating names now since DH and I do not agree on anything and we'll need time to come to an agreement! lol We already know a boy would be a junior, so no options there....

We have a very common last name, I want a name that is cute when she's little but professional enough when she's older. What do you think of these? Which would you think is the most popular right now? (I have to think of how many kids will have our child's exact first & last name since it's so common!)....and what nicknames would you use for each of them? I know some nicknames are more obvious (i.e. Maddy, Liz (I don't like Liz as a nickname though!)....I like Elli as a nickname, but DH doesn't, I feel like he disagrees with everything I like!! Madeleine
Hannah
Elizabeth
Cecilia

Re: girl names

I think they're all fairly common but not super trendy or overly used.

Nicknames for Madeline: (besides the obvious Maddie)

Del
Linnie
Minnie
Milly
Midge <-- was the Mom's name on AMC's The Killing. I don't know what it was short for but seems like it fits.

Hannah -- I don't think I know any nicknames for Hannah except just shortening it to Han...

Elizabeth has a ton of nicknames:

Lizzy
Beth
Izzy
Betty/Betsy/Bets
Ella
Lizbeth
Libby

I feel like I haven't heard a ton of kids named Elizabeth as a first name but its a very common middle name! (It's mine!)

I like some combinations of these three though.

Madeline Elizabeth
Elizabeth Madeline
Hannah Madeline
Hannah Elizebeth

I think both Madeline and Elizabeth are both cute with the nickname options AND work as a good professional sounding full name.

But I don't particularly care for either with Hannah as the middle name.

Re: girl names

thanks so much for the input!!! I added Cecilia to the mix after you replied :) I LOVE Ella as a nickname, so cute!! Do you think people will honor what nickname you want used for your child? I see it with my sister's daughter, sometimes people use whatever nickname they want lol, that would annoy the heck out of me!

I agree that Elizabeth doesn't seem hugely popular as a first name these days, so that's a bonus to me! I don't think Madeleine is uber popular, but Madison is....and b/c of that there could be a lot of girls going by the same nickname (Maddy) in class (yes I do overthink everything! Chat Icon

as far as middle names, I don't like Hannah as a middle name either- I have a few contenders as middle names- Juliet, Grace, Elise, Evelyn or Sofia (the last 2 would be in honor of family members).

Although I don't care for Cecilia paired with any of the above as a middle name -- I think it's almost my favorite out of the possibilities.

You don't hear it very often. But I think the name is very pretty and classy with two cute nicknames Cici and Celia. Plus it reminds me of Simon and Garfunkle's great song Chat Icon

ETA: just saw your other middle name choices.

LOVE Cecilia Grace!!

You can't go wrong with Elizabeth, it's a classic. I really like Hannah too.

DH and I are having the same problem! I don't like ANY name he suggests! lol He likes all the trendy names and I want something familiar, but not over-used.

Not sure if you've been here, but nameberry.com is a good place to get name ideas. They have a section called "If you like X, you'll probably love Y" It's cool because you can find a name similar to one that you like, that you may like even better.

I'll be honest, the song is what made me fall in love with that name ages ago :)

Yes!! I've been on that site a lot, I feel like most of the names they suggest I end up not liking for one reason or another! I just found myself googling "english literary girls names" LOL I just love classic names that aren't overly used....but it's tough b/c some of literary names are really funky!! (i.e. some suggestions on nameberry: Pansy, Pleasant, Remarkable, Romola, Honora....no thanks! lol)

I really like Cecilia Grace too! Out of the middle names I like I think Grace is the only one that really goes with it. Sometimes I wonder if all of this overthinking is worth it because I know that once you see your LO in the hospital you already know which name fits best!

I wanted to add that another first name I like is Heidi, but DH absolutely hates it (I think it goes well with our last name)....so I don't think there's any warming up to that name for him so I gave up! lol

I've been there a lot too, even before I was PG Chat Icon I have the same problem, they have a lot of "original" names that I like, but are not usable.

BTW I really love Heidi too. Didn't pass that one by DH yet, but I'm sure he'll hate it just like all the other names I suggestChat Icon

My girls are Hannah and Brielle. We like Ellie for a nickname but it hasn't really stuck yet. Only my brother calls her that. Chat Icon

We also had Brynn, Grace, and Brenna on the list.

Elizabeth Lily is on our top 3 list. I also love Madeline but sort of dislike Maddie because it's just a popular nickname right now. Cecelia was also on our short list, but doesn't sound great with our last name. So basically I LOVE all your names, ha. Out of all three I think I'd go with Cecelia Grace, I like Madeline Elizabeth, but could be a mouthful if you have a longer last name.

I asked DH to rank which of the names he liked from most to least:

Cecilia
Hannah
Elizabeth
Madeleine
Heidi (now he said it's a hooker's name instead of a stripper lol, he really does not like this name!!)

and his silliest comment ever...when I said I love the nickname Ella for Elizabeth, he said all he could think of was Rihanna's Umbrella song (-ella, ella ella ella LOL we both hate that song), he is so weird! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: girl names

Now that I'm out of hiding I can reference this ... but I really like the name 'Moses'.

About five years ago at Easter time we were watching the Ten Commandments movie and I was like 'isn't that kind of a cool name?' And DH was like 'What? No way. Absolutely not. I'm never naming a kid that.'

It didn't take long for DH to start looking ahead and talking about 'we can take Mose there one day.'

We're staying team green but he thinks this kid is coming out a boy and it's being called Moses.

Chat Icon So what I'm saying is... if I can sell a nay-saying Catholic on the super Jewish name 'Moses'

... you can work out Heidi if you really want to. Chat Icon

FWIW -- I love Heidi. It's adorable. The only thing it reminds me of it Heidi from Tool Time on Home Improvement.

I love all the names you mentioned.

I don't think there are really any nicknames for Hannah.

Elizabeth can be Liza, Lizzie, Ellie, Beth, Betty

Cecelia can be CeCe

Madeleine I can only think of Maddy

ETA: I think Heidi is adorable
