Genetic Testing
Did any of you ladies have this done before you started TTC? I was wondering whether or not it was worth it, in your opinions. I have the name of a Genetic Counselor that we can meet with, but I am not sure if we should spend the money.

Re: Genetic Testing
I don't see that there's any need to do it UNLESS you know there is a history of genetic issues in either of your families. I mean, at this point. Obviously if you're having issues conceiving it would be something to consider doing at that point.

Genetic Testing
My ob/gyn ran a large panel of genetics tests. They were covered 100% by my insurance. Personally, I thought it was very important due to my age and ethnic background. I think it is a personal choice but in my opinion better safe than sorry.

Re: Genetic Testing
I did. It was recommended by my RE. My genetic counselor as well as my geneticist went above and beyond to make sure any possible genetic issues could be ruled out. They called labs for us, did a history, and really put us as ease.

Re: Genetic Testing
My RE automatically does genetic testing during your first consultation visit. I think it is helpful if you know there could be something but honestly I came back for a carrier for a hemoglobin disorder and she just made me panic until DH got his results and wasn't a carrier.

Genetic Testing
I asked my OB about this at my old practice and he told me it was absolutely not necessary prior to TTC because we had no medical histories to indicate issues, and that they still wouldn't recommend it until we'd been TTC unsuccessfully for a period of time and was seeing an RE.

I would just go to my ob for b/w. usual stuff for your ethnicity plus any disorders in your fam.

Re: Genetic Testing
I didn't do it off the bat. When we were ttc for a year and no baby, I decided to see a specialist and he started doing some testing. We were going to start with the tests that were covered by insurance. I didn't get far into the testing though because I got pregnant pretty quickly after my first appt with him. He really gave me the hope i needed to get that sperm to my egg!! haha.
I'd think if you have reason for concern then go for the testing. If you don't ahve any factors and insurance doesn't cover it, then I'd skip it... unless of course it's been a while that you are TTC and you are looking for some answers.
