Genetic Testing

We are not TTC just yet but my Gyn would like me to have genetic testing done since I am 34. Any experiences with this? What diseases are commonly tested for? Any insight would be helpful- For some reason the idea of genetic testing makes me really nervous.

Re: Genetic Testing

My gyn did this also. I don't know what they were testing for but I also don't know anything about my family history. They never called back to say anything so I assume it's good.

Re: Genetic Testing

My doctor did say that not every doctor will perform genetic testing but he feels it is important especially with increased maternal age.

I'm 34 also and my gyn said it's not necessary to perform genetic testing as a precautionary measure and she usually doesn't because the testing is usually not covered by insurance unless it's deemed to be "medically necessary". Try not too worry too much though - maybe your doctor has a different point of view and runs genetic testing on all his patients?

He does it for all of his patients that are TTC over 35. My background would likely make me a candidate even if my doctor did not routinely test.

Re: Genetic Testing

I say if he wants to test for it then good. it's always good to be tested. besides when you do get pregnant you would have to have it then anyway. now you won't need it.

don't get too worked up on what other doctor's do or don't do. every doctor is different and has different protocol.

i know they test to see if you are a carrier for cystic fibrosis, down's syndrome, some spinal disorders, i think fragile x. i forget the rest. but it's a bunch of stuff. i think possibly even tay sachs too.

good luck!! and remember IF you happen to be a carrier... it doesn't mean your baby will have whatever you're a carrier for. they just will have to test DH and see if he's a carrier as well. and IF he is it still doesn't mean LO will have the disorder.
