Genetic testing

Since I have my 'first' appointment with the new doctor next week I feel like i'm starting all over again.

What genetic testing is important to have? I know they did a few things at the other doctor but i wonder if i'm missing anything important.

I just hope that we are able to get things started quickly and don't have to wait another cycle (then again it prob depends on whether AF comes this week or not).

Re: Genetic testing

I didn't do genetic testing before ttc, but at my first pregnancy appt this week they took bloodwork to do the genetic testing and will be sending us to genetic counseling also because of our family history. I asked and they said they test for an entire range of genetic diseases and I believe if youre jewish, they do additional testing also.

Re: Genetic testing

I had an Ashkenazi jew panel done which consisted of a bunch of tests but i didn't know if there was anything else I should mention. I did specifically ask for one test and saw something at one point on here but don't remember what.

We were supposed to have genetic counseling done but haven't really. They are the ones that gave me info on the one test but I don't know if they are waiting for me to have this test done before we actually go in before i make an appointment.

If you are Ashkenazi Jews or African-American, they can run a panel of blood tests to determine if you are a carrier for specific disorders.

Re: Genetic testing

When I had my annual appointment and mentioned we might be TTC my doctor offered to run a few genetic tests so I did it.
They tested for Cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, fragile x syndrome, and a bunch of other disorders and then when my blood work came in there was a bit of concern so they had my husband get tested and when all of the blood work was in we met with a genetic counselor.
She went over all of our blood work results and they took a very detailed history of both sides of our families.
I thought it was very informative and it put our minds at ease for a few things.

Glad I could be of some help! Yes, you meet with them after to review everything you were tested for and then to do a family history.
