GD Really Stinks
I had my first appointment with the nutritionist today, and I'm so upset, this whole thing stinks. I don't know how I'm going to deal. I need to be at 120 1 hour after meals, which just seems impossible. She explained to me why, but that doesn't make me feel any better.
With my work schedule and all the other things I have going on, I don't have time to deal with menu planning and cooking.
I guess this is just a vent. I'm feeling sorry for myself. Waaahhhh

I'm sorry - 120 after 1 hour must be really hard... i have to be 120 after 2 hours and it's still hard sometimes. I believe one of the other girls on here is in the same boat as you.

Re: GD Really Stinks
It's not completely horrible and the best thing is it's not forever. I was very overwhelmed at the beginning, but have gotten used to it. 2 cups of pasta w/ meat n veggies or 2 slices of pizza w/ meat. grilled cheese w/ ham and soup, trail mix and graham crackers w/ peanut better are good snacks. I love cereal as my morning snack, but sometimes I get grapes. You can do it.

Re: GD Really Stinks
60-90 fasting 120 or less 1 hour after meals 90-120 bedtime.
She said its 120 at 1 hour after because they want to know what it is at peak (which would be one hour after meals), not once it comes back down (2 hours after), because the peak is what affects what the baby needs to compensate for.
To be honest I think my counselor is just really conservative. She won't let me have fruit or milk anytime other than lunch, mid-day snack or dinner. So not at night or in the morning at all. No juice ever. She won't even let me see if I can handle any of this or not before making these rules. She's just treating me like I can't handle it, which makes no sense, because I didn't fail that badly.

Re: GD Really Stinks
I know first hand how stressful and upsetting GD can be. I too had to be under 120 an hour after meals. under 90 at fasting. under 95 before meals it was difficult. and to be honest my numbers were too high... and i ended up on insulin.
different dr's and nutritionists each have their own standards. also, each person reacts differently to the GD diet... some can eat things at times that others can't.
it's important to follow the diet and do what they say to do. my baby was born perfectly healthy. they send the GD babies to the nicu for sugar testing. she failed the first test (was low) so they gave her a bottle. she passed the rest of the tests and was kicked out of the nicu really fast.
it will be ok. if you need to vent or need advice feel free to fm me.

i couldn't eat like that. 2 cups of pasta was far too many carbs for me... my limit was half a cup at dinner.
if i had pizza.. it could only be one slice without the crust and i had to have a salad and veggies too.
i couldn't touch cereal in the mornings... and fruit was a def no no for me in the morning too.
everyone's body handles the foods differently. i'm surprised you are able to eat that way... actually i'm more jealous!!!

idk about the milk.. but for some people fruit in the morning is hard bc of the sugar. i was told that the enzymes that break down the sugar don't 'wake up' until later in the day.. so your body can handle fruit better later on than it can in the mornings. this def rang true for me. through talking with other gd's i have found this to usually be the same with them as well.
i couldn't have juice ever either. i did cheat once in a while with that though... i'd have a box drink of fruitables on rare occasion.
your nutritionist sounds a lot like mine. is her last name Katz by any chance?

Re: GD Really Stinks
I'm 120 1 hour after meals too, it does suck. Let me tell you I easily could to that, but I was eating no carbs. I went to my 2 week follow up and got blasted for losing 3 pounds and not eating carbs. So now I'm on insulin and eating carbs. It's a pain, but not too bad. I questioned the 120 1 hour and she said they have done research and while ADA recommends 140 1 hour after, for GD patients 120 after leads to a healthier baby. Now that I am on insulin, I can eat more normal meals, but still watch carbs, breakfast is my hardest.
I have the no milk and fruit at breakfast thing too, but what I'm doing is having breakfast, testing an hour later, than having coffee with milk, a piece of fruit and string cheese. Are you seeing Wexler's office?
ETA: I only failed by 2 points and I can't handle carbs. I do have milk as part of my night snack though.

I do get the 2 hours, so maybe that makes a difference? I notice that when I do eat certain things it makes the sugar go to 113-119, but as long as it's under, I "think" 125 they don't cover w/ insulin.

I've had no pizza or pasta, I'm do scared. I'm trying to eat carbs, but too rely on chicken, cheese, eggs and veggies too much. Both the nutrionist and the endo nurse said breastfeeding would help me and the baby, so I'm nervous about the hospital giving the baby formula if his sugar is low.
