gate for deck with strange opening..

I'd like to gate in the deck for DS this year. The problem is that the stairs to go down start before the post does...do you know what I mean? You step three steps and then reach the end of the deck where the post and house could connect a gate. If we gate the bottom the steps still create a problem...has anyone gate something like this?

How old is DS? Is he crawling? Walking? I would just try to teach him how to crawl down those 3 stairs and then gate the regular steps if you have to... You could also use the superyard gates connected and rounded around the steps if you had to. We did that in our house and held them tight with a bunge cord. (I have a split so putting up 4 gates wasn't an option!) DS learned he couldn't just go down the stairs and if he wanted to, it had to be on his belly sliding down.
