Gardners: Anyone grow pumpkins?

Gardners: Anyone grow pumpkins?

And if so, can you tell me what the usual "crop" is like, etc....

We planted one in the spring and this thing has gotten seriously OUT OF CONTROL! It's swallowed up an entire portion of my yard, meanwhile we've cut it back a few times!

However, it doesn't look like any actual pumpkins are growing...just the yellow flowers for now. Should they be growing already? If not, will it be soon? How many pumpkins does your vine yield?

TIA!

Re: Gardners: Anyone grow pumpkins?

This is our first year growing pumpkins, and we're seeing the same thing. The plants are growing like crazy, but I don't think there are any flowers yet. It's still August, so I don't think they'll be showing up for a while, though.

Plant pumpkins!!!! Make $$$$ Chat Icon Actually, if you get them off Amish farmers, they're fairly cheap!!!! We got our original pumpkins from an Amish farmer, who lives along Rt. 23/New Holland Pike, just before one gets to New Holland, Pa. After this surprise, I told my DH we need to throw more dead pumpkins into our garden, and sell them ourselves to our neighborhhood!!!! Mary

Re: Gardners: Anyone grow pumpkins?

My neighbor grows pumpkins every year. I have seen and heard from him that they do spread rapidly and if you don't contain them to one area you can end up having them shoot/spread across your lawn too.

You probably won't start to see pumpkins yet, but the yellow flowers now...and the more the better b/c pretty much everywhere there is a flower you will get a pumpkin! Chat Icon

Re: Gardners: Anyone grow pumpkins?

My husband used the toss the dead pumpkin over there method too and this year we have tons of pumpkins! They are contained to a side area of our backyard but I would say the are definitely out of control! We probably have at least 10 pumpkins already that are maybe 7-8 inch diameter...and more on the way! The 1 small pumpkin he tossed there was not much bigger so I don't know if these are as big as they are going to get or they will get keep growing until Halloween!

Since you actually planted yours in the spring maybe yours are a few months behind those of us that just tossed them last fall!

ETA - pumpkins have male and female flowers so not all flowers will produce pumpkins. (I did some research on this after I learned what the mystery vines were that were growing in our yard!)

Re: Gardners: Anyone grow pumpkins?

Checked the pumpkin patch today; We have three large ones, probably 15/20 little ones, and I think another variety might be growing, perhaps neck pumpkins. Don't know because the big ones looked like neck pumpkins before they grew. BTW, did you know that the stems/vines of pumpkins are picky?? Mary

The Milk Pail in Water Mill has pumpkins out for sale already, so they must be here.

Wow we toss our pumpkins in the woods each year, I wonder if there are any growing out there. I'll have to check!
