Gallbladder removal
I've been at Winthrop since Monday afternoon with acute pancreatitis due to gallstones. They're removing my gallbladder today. Any advice? Thanks!

After surgery put a pillow under your knees. It helps to not stretch the skin around the incision sites.

Agreed and take it easy! Have help at home for a few days to get you up and down and get a stool softener your stomach muscles will be sore and constipation from narcotics isn't fun so def take something I took colace. I was fine in 3 weeks I have a hard time recovering from surgery so most people I know were fine in a week When you start eating foods, go slow and bland, my digestive system was a mess for about a month after until it got used to no gallbladder but a good probiotic was so helpful good luck!!!

If you have to cough or sneeze while you are still hearing, take a pillow and press it against your stomach as counter pressure.

Re: Gallbladder removal
I had mine removed in October st Winthrop. It was quick. I felt discomfort in my shoulders after when the air in my body was releasing from the laparoscopic surgery. It helps if you sit up.
Also take a stool softener. I was so constipated after.
Good luck and feel better

Def try to walk as much as they let you! My recent surgery my shoulders and back were killing me and the more I walked the more the gasses came out sorry TMI but it relieved a lot of the shoulder and back pain. good Luck and feel better!!!!! Also they gave me these bags that popped and they would heat instantly, they helped too

Re: Gallbladder removal
Mine was super easy. Home the same day, back to work in a week, out to dinner the next night.
I was sore and slow moving but never in excruciating pain. The worst pain was the shoulder pain- it felt like someone karate chopped me in both shoulders for almost a week. I put warm, moist heat packs on them and took advil for that pain more so than the incision. I have zero scars and now I can eat whatever I want with no attacks.
ETA- and something they dont' tell you- it's normal to find that you have a lot of diarrhea for a while afterwards. It's your body adjusting to not having the gallbladder there to hold the bile. Immoidium is your friend!

Watch what you eat afterwards. I could not handle any greasy or fatty foods for a loooooong time.

Thanks everyone! Definitely not the way I expected to start a new year. We were literally driving home from a family trip in Pennsylvania when the symptoms started and I barely made the 3 hours back to Long Island before I had DH drop me off at the ER at Winthrop and I've been here since. I just can't wait to be pain free. And eat! I haven't eaten since Sunday night.

When you wake up from surgery the relief is amazing. I was so happy to not have that excruciating pain of the gallstone attack anymore. I had been in horrible pain and unable to eat for 3 days. It was awesome.

Re: Gallbladder removal
Ugh that sucks.
I had mine removed a few years ago. My recovery was harder than most mainly because my gallbladder was so diseased it was adhering to my insides
Even so I was back to work within 2-3 weeks. I agree with the other poster though watch what you eat after. I had really bad random d for about 2 years post op. It's much better now. That said I'm so glad I had mine removed. Those attacks were horrible.
Feel better soon!

That sounds awful! They said mine isn't that bad but they want it removed to prevent pancreatitis in the future.

I was told after 3pm. They took me into the OR at 8:45 and I was out of recovery and back in my bed at 1:30am.

Re: Gallbladder removal
good luck!!!! You will feel sore for a little bit. They had me up and walking immediately. I couldn't lift anything over 30-40 lbs for 2 weeks. Be careful what you eat for the first few weeks. Your body has to realize that your gall bladder is gone. I know things went right through me.

Good luck. My dad had his out via emergency surgery because they had no clue what his issue was so they just went in to "open him up". Since your is planned they will go in via lap. Even with him goign through a full surgery his recovery was great and had very little pain. He said the gall bladder pain was the worst he had ever experienced (even his major heart attacks).
Just keep thinking when its over you won't have the pain anymore. And just take it easy after.

I'm home! Definitely sore but moving around ok. Just slowly. Timing could have been better. I can't lift my kids and DH is starting a new job on Monday. No clue what I'm going to do!

Re: Gallbladder removal
Although it's hard with the kids, just try to take it easy. I felt pretty good in a few days after mine was out, but I could really tell when I did too much. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
