 | Question to the people who are looking for your first house.....
are you looking for something that you are planning on leaving? Meaning your first home, a starter?
Or are you looking for THE home? Meaning you are looking for the house you plan on being there for the net 30 years or so?

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking we're looking for something that is small, however that has the potential in case we need to build upon.
We are looking for a ranch or a cape that we can extend if needed. we figure in 5 -7 years when we want to start a family, we can either move into something bigger or extend.

id love to buy my dream home, but thats impossible in NY!

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking We are looking for something that will be for the long run...decades! I don't want a starter home - nothing wrong with them - but after living in the co-op we feel like we've been there done that.
That said, we are open to homes that have potential of building onto. So 3 bedrooms now is fine so long as down the road I can make it 4 or 5 if I want.

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking We originally were looking for something that also had potential and enough land so if we needed to build we could.
After about 6 months of looking, the house we are about to close on actually will be sufficient if we decide to stay there for the next 30 yrs.

We really lucked out and are very happy.

 Our house-to-be
has 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a full finished basement, living room, kitchen, and den.
So for our planned family of 4, that is more than enough room.

We were looking for something we are going to stay in for the long term. Someplace we can raise and grow a family. We had no intention of looking for a starter home.

Ditto. And that's exactly what we got. Of course, we had to leave NY. But to us, it's worth it.

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking We looked for houses we could grow into. Most of the houses we saw, we felt we'd grow out of in ~10 years.
We knew that we wouldn't be purchasing our dream home on LI coming out of the gate...but we wanted a house we could work with.

The house we wound up buying is a blank slate. As a cape with an unfinished attic/upstairs, we can dormer and expand as we wish. Plus the full unfinished basement can be used as living space as well.

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking I really don't want a starter home - so what we've looked for could fit us and 2 kids. Plus the in-law's wanted some space as well, making the process a bit more difficult. But we're looking in Orange County - so you get more bang for your buck. |

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking We were looking for a starter home. At first I was against this and wanted to move into the house I could be old and gray in. But we just really needed/wanted a house - our "old and gray" house is going to cost alot more then this one did. We hope to be here no more then 5 years. This house was also an investment. It is a legal two family and we do not plan on selling it. We will keep it and rent it out.

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking We’ve definitely agreed that our dream house doesn’t exist on LI. Not unless we hit the lottery. We’re looking for a house for now. We don’t know exactly how long, but definitely not forever. I can’t see myself retiring here. I couldn’t afford to anyway. |

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking This was our first house. Small but 3 bedrooms 2 baths. WE dont anticpate staying here, but at the time it was in our budget. So we took it.
My dream home would require us working to pay for a mortgage and there was no way I was doinf that.

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking We bought a starter home 3 years ago and I wouldn't have it any other way. We got a GREAT deal on our 4 BD 2 Ba expanded ranch(ranch bottom, cape top) The value has increased 120k since our last appraisal and IMO renting is throwing money away. This house is in a bad school district so by the time we have children and they are in school it will be at least 6-7 years. |

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking We just bought our first home last month. We initially started looking for something that we can stay in for the next 30 years, but then decided that we may move further west within the next 3 years (we bought a house in coram).
However, the house we purchased does have the potential to build upon if we want to stay. We currently have 3br, 2.5 bath, and with a huge living room with cathedral ceilings, we can easily dormer the upstairs, and build 1 or 2 bedrooms above the living room.

Part of it for us too is that we are on the "older" side (I'm 35 and he's 40), so we didn't want to have to do this again. Also, DH's intention is to pay down the mortgage as quick as possible, he hates debt of any kind and didn't want to carry a mortgage for the rest of his life.

 | Re: Question to the people who are looking we bought with the intention of staying in the house between 7-10 years. This is our first house, certainly not a dream home, but ok for a while. I can raise a child here and still have room, but in order for me to make it a dream home it will take a lot of $$. I'm better off buying one or building one from scratch.
We may move out of state in a few years but that's not decided. We do know that we will not stay here forever.
