It's funny, the top high school in Rockland County based on this list - Spring Valley, number 470 - is considered the worst district in the county.
ETA - But, our district isn't too far behind at 500 (the second Rockland County HS on this list).

I know that this is off of the topic, but I have a really hard time believing that the way that public high schools are ranked on this survey is accurate in anyway. If you look through the previous years, there is entirely too much discrepancy from year to year. Yes, a school can have some years that are better than others, but these changes are too drastic.
For example, I looked at my district (smithtown)-
2007- 854 2006- 297 2005- didn't make the list of 1300 schools 2003- 264
It's not just Smithtown either, it's similar results with a lot of the schools. When they do college rankings, schools might move up or down a few rungs but it is never this drastic...it takes time for a school to get much better or go south...certainly more than one year.

This is true. And each source that ranks school districts uses different criteria. There really is no concrete way to rank school districts. I think a lot of what goes on here on LI anyway in terms of saying a school district is "great" or not is very biased.

I don't know how much weight you can put in the ranking.
People on here rarely have anything nice to say about Huntington SD...it ranks #478 on this list. Northport SD is always raved about on here and it ranks #420...Huntington is the only LI school between #420 and #479. That makes it a pretty decent school according to this list. So, go figure.
I think it's all subjective...what may be important to one isn't going to be relevant to the next. Go with what you're comfortable with.
