Fun Renovation Related Question

So, a lot of us have houses that have old bathrooms, ugly paneling in a basement, etc.. from homes built or reno'd in the 60's/70's.

What do you think 20 years from now will look so dated and ugly?

I have no clue-- but I am sure there was a time when pink tile and avocado colored appliance was "de rigueur".

Stainless steel?
Granite?
Paneling/Moulding?

i think we'll all look back on those precious stainless steel appliances and shake our heads and wonder why they were sooooo trendy

I think the same thing every time we try and get ideas of what we want to change now

I think fabric's mostly if I still have them

everything else we are sticking to very neutral tastes because we know we will sell one day, so I have no idea what it will be.

I think dark cherry cabinets will look dated quick because dark cabinets goes in and out often. right now they are still in. maybe even the dark wood floors.

I see many people putting flagstone on their home and while it does look awesome I wonder how it will look in 20yrs. We just did brick with siding outside instead of changing to flagstone because brick has been popular forever.

I'm very conscious of trends, and most of what we've been doing to the house has involved looking at what's popular now, and what was popular years ago, and we're trying to avoid too many trendy things.

Our kitchen won't have granite, and we're leaning away from SS appliances. I think those will be "Soooo Naughts" (aka the "Naughty Decade"...

We've open up the floor plan a bit, but not completely. I think the "open floorplan" taken to the extreme may be out of style at some point.

Unfortunately, sometimes it's hard to spot a trendy item until years after you've installed it and look back....

I've thought of all of these things, but really when it comes down to it, we have to live in the here and now and what we like. If we stay in our homes for that long, will be renovate again.....of course we will at some point. Or at least buy new furniture and repaint the walls. For our home we plan on staying for the long haul, so the changes we make large or small will be with us for 20+ years most likely. I'm comfortable with what we have done in our home and I'm sure I will look back and say "wow I really liked that 20 years ago", but I have also liked my "Big Hair" from the 80's. Times change....just have to go with them I guess.

I think cherry cabinets and stainless steel appliances will scream 2000's, LOL.

I have a dark brown cabinet (not too red) and I regret not going with white wood cabinetry which I feel is a little more classic.
