FTWMs, come in

Have you given thought to what you will do when your LOs start school and have to be at the bus stop? Do you have enough time in morning before work to wait with them? If not, what are your plans?

FTWMs, come in

I will likely be able to, as I don't have to leave my house till about 8. If not, my husband is self employed and makes his own schedule, so he can always do it.

Of course. Sadly I think about this before I even get pregnant! LOL Whos going to watch my child before the are old enough to go to school and after whos going to get them to and from. Im always thinking about it. I actually called the school district we were moving to before I bid on the house to make sure they had before and aftercare.

I'm a PTWM and I think about this too. When DD starts school I will have to change jobs. Right now I work 12 hour shifts leaving the house at 6:15 and home around 8pm. It works now b/c we stay by my mother in law the 2 days I work but when she starts school this is not going to work.

As of right now, I am lucky that DH works in the evenings and will be able to take our DD to school. I am a teacher and will have to leave for work much earlier than her school will start. I never really thought about it until your post (she's only 4 months old) but it makes me kind of sad Chat Icon

Re: FTWMs, come in

I am fortunate in that I will have enough time in the morning to see my kid(s) off to school. If my DH is off on a week day, he can do it if I need to leave early or whatever.

FTWMs, come in

Luckily I have a flexible work schedule at my job so I can take DS to the bus stop. I just won't be able to drop off and pick up so hopefully DH will still have an early work schedule and he can pick up.

After care when he is younger. After that my guess is he will be involved in sports and have practice after school so I should be able to get there by the time practice ends

Thank God for grandparents! They will take care of this for us, we'll probably enroll DS in a CAtholic school near their home (and on our commute to work) to make it easier on my parents.

I have to be at work at 7:30 so my kids will probably be going to before care.

I go to work super early and my hubby does too.

We will get a nanny/housekeeper/cook at that time for before & after school... there is no other way.

I hope she will dress kids, give breakfast, see bus pick them up. Then light clean and cook. She can relax or go out after that... but must be there for when kids get out.

DH & I are fortunate in that we both work very family-friendly jobs with very flexible hours very close to home (less than 10 min. each), so it shouldn't be an issue for us. With working opposite shifts we're able to stay home with them Mon-Wed already so we'd only have to worry 2 days a week & it shouldn't be a problem even then...

I think about it all the time. I was even thinking about it last night! I leave at 7 and DH leaves at 6.30 in the morning right now but I'm hoping he will be able to adjust his schedule so that he can put DD on the bus in the morning. Then, it will be either after-care at the school (or YMCA) or I will get a sitter to watch DD for a couple of hours after school.

Re: FTWMs, come in

My DS's babysitter lives right by the school so I think she will take him if I cant. If not, my mom may be retired by then. My neighbor has 2 kids the same age as mine but I would never ask her to take him unless she offered which I highly doubt. I could probably go to work late but not all of the time. Maybe I will work in Long Island then but doubt it because I am overpaid at my current job in the city and have been there for over 10 years!

Re: FTWMs, come in

I work part time, so the mornings are easy, I'm home. But I'm at work n the afternoon, so I have family getting DS off the bus and watching until DH gets home. It's only about a 1.5-2 hour gap so it's not too bad.

Re: FTWMs, come in

Has been on my mind for four years, ds is 3. I figure after care and before care will be an option. I am also hoping that maybe my next door neighbor can drop him off to the bus along with her dd which would eliminate before care. Honestly don't know. It seems everyone in my neighborhood has a parent who is at home during the day.

FTWMs, come in

i dont know what time school starts but i have to be at work at 830 so hopefully ill be able to see them to school every day. aas for aftter school, we will have to pay someone for that unless our financial situation drastically changes and we suddenly can afford me to be at home or work part time- but idont see that happending as DH and I are equal breadwinners

I am lucky in that I will be able to wait at the bus stop or even take DD to school. It's after school that will be an issue. I am pretty sure my district provides after school care but if she is involved in any after school activities outside of the school I really have no idea how we are going to manage that.

Re: FTWMs, come in

Sometimes things work out before you think they will. DH's company was bought and he was able to negotiate WAH when they moved the offices. He drops off and p/u from bus stop. (He even took DS for half day kindergarten)

but it also depends on start time. My nephew's bus in the next district over comes 1 hour before my kids' bus does. I could do 8 AM, I can't do 9. (on the reverse, I'm able to p/u in afternoon though)

We would use before/after care though, if DH didn't WAH.

Yes, I have thought of it. I live a block from her elementry school. I live Less than 2mi from her middle school they are building and less than 8mi from her HS.

I thought about it a lot! Chat Icon I bought a house within walking distance to grade school and middle school. She can take a bus to HS if she wants.

The walk to Middle School is Go right out of the house, walk, walk, walk all straight. Make a right at the BIG road but do not cross it (which means she only crosses one small road that happens to be in a school zone itself with crossing guards) she has a half block or less walk to the middle school.

I guess my only concern is from my own twisted memories. Her walk to middle school takes her past an area that's kind of like the 'trails'. We live behind a green belt area. It dips very low and has trails in there. I KNOW if I were in middle school, I'd find a way to cut through there to go home. I did that in school with trails we had. It was the place for bad things Chat Icon I knew it then and still did it. My parents never told me specifically 'not' to but warned me to be careful. Looking back it was crazy!

So I told Jim I may drive her half way up the road and drop her off LOL but there's a little girl across the street from us that is her age, hopefully they are friends and can take the walk together. My whole neighborhood (feels like) walks up that darned road, dog walking, joggers, etc. It passes by the elementry school on the left and a catholic church on the right. Then green belt for about a block's worth of distance.

Re: FTWMs, come in

If I only had one child, then yes, I could put my son on the bus. He would have after care, for sure.

But DC#2 will have to go to daycare when DC#1 is in school, so I will have to put DS#1 in before-care, then take DC#2 to daycare, and then get myself to work.

The logistics of pickup with have to be determined later, since after care ends at a set time, whereas I can pay for a later pickup at daycare.

I've thought about it, but I'm not worrying about it. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
