FTWM Please Come In
I have been back at work for 2 months now. It took me at least 3 weeks to get back into the swing of things and getting up to speed after being out for 3 months on maternity leave.
I am having trouble concentrating at work and getting things done! And it's not that I am sitting here missing DS. Yes, I think about him often but I just think my brain is "different" now. I am distracted and stare at my screen and flip between projects not being to focus on just one. I don't know what happened to me but I feel so ineffective at work lately. I feel like I have a deadline each day to leave work (vs working till the work is done), get home and relieve the nanny, and sometimes feel like it's not enough time to get everything done, so I procrastinate and create a vicious cycle of not getting anything done. It doesn't help that my day is broken up by 5-6 meetings a day.
Does this make any sense?? I don't know how to get myself to focus...
Sorry just needed to vent.

I think it just takes more thime than you think to get your brain back in work mode. You may get caught up work wise but your brain is still on Maternity leave.

FTWM Please Come In
What helped me was to make a TO Do list of what I want to accomplish that day at work. It helps me. I like to write things down. I feel better knowing I accomplished what I said I would. Also it does take time to get back in the swing of things but it will! HTH!

I start w the smallest easiest project so when I finish it I feel accomplished and then move on to the next one. It seems to help.
But I totally understand you have so much to do so you do nothing!

I have been back at work almost 6 months and I still have days where I can't concentrate. I go off into dazes here and there and eventhough I may have read a paper, I have no idea what I just did.
I agree with PP, what I do find helps, is making a to do list every day and trying to stick to that.

YES! I feel exactly the same. It's like I have mommy brain or something- my focus is out the window. And you are right- knowing you have to rush out at a certain time due to childcare obligations just kind of puts extra stress on you and makes you even less effective.
I agree with the "to do" lists- for me, writing things down helps me remember that I need to get it done (because my memory is also shot lately!) and I like the feeling of accomplishment when I cross it off the list and don't have to worry about it anymore.

OK, glad I'm not the only one. This is a good idea...need to stick to my lists more. Thanks ladies.

I agree with the pp's cut yourself a break- 3 weeks is nothing, I have been back 2 years and I still have those days- you are being pulled in a million directions- and its tougher some days that others! Also, I would die without my lists, I have them for everything- home, work, and a family calendar with everyone's dates, p/u times/places etc.
Its a lot to remember

yep I have lists for everything, not just work. I need my lists. My mommy brain...if it wasn't for my lists I would be lost!

Re: FTWM Please Come In
I've been back for more than a year and still feel this. Like a PP said, it really does help to have a list of what you want to accomplish for the day. And I make it manageable. I don't try to overachieve. I'd rather finish my list and find an extra hour to work on something else I wasn't expecting to that day.

I totally agree with To Do Lists
Plus really our brains ARE different. Its not just thinking of AJ all day but its the added reality that she is there. I work to pay for daycare. I make her appts for doctor visits etc. I need to leave at 5pm to get to her and pick her up. Its on my mind. Not just her but everything about my life that has changed. I just needed to learn a new way of dealing with work.
Luckily for me, I moved less than 6m back so the change of pace in a new location helped refocus me.

I feel you. I have to write EVERYTHING down, or I’ll just forget. My memory wasn’t always the greatest but, since having DD, it’s SOOOOO much worse.

I feel the same way, I now need to write everything down too! My boss knows this because I always say hold that thought and run back to my office and get my pad so I can write everything down.
I hope my brain comes back because its annoying.

Re: FTWM Please Come In
My job is in shifts so once my shift is done, it's done.
With that said I still don't feel like I'm in the swing of things. I work a crazy schedule (overnights) and I am totally lacking in sleep. It takes time I guess.
