FTWM of toddlers (18 months+), what do you do about breakfast on weekdays if you have to wake them up early to leave the house?

DH got a new job and the hours are now 8-5 (not 9-6 anymore), same as mine. So we'll be waking her up earlier now, probably around 7, to meet up with IL's before work which is about a 30 min drive.

What do you do for breakfast for them if you wake your DC up to leave the house early? Wait til they get where they're going? Give something small before leaving? I don't like her eating in the car esp if nobody is sitting in the back with her (she's still rear facing).

When I worked and DD went to daycare, we were out the door by 7:30. She would have her milk/yogurt smoothie sippy while I got dressed for work, and then breakfast at daycare.

DS doesn't eat bfast until 8:30 at daycare. Sometimes we're up and out at 6:30. They'll give him cheerios to hold him over until it's time for bfast. If we're home and he's hungry, we do the same. He can snack on those as much as he wants....

My DD is 18 months and she gets up sometime between 6:30 and 7 am. She gets 8 oz of milk when she gets up and then gets breakfast at the sitters. We usually arrive there around 8:30.

DS goes to daycare. I drop him off there at 7AM. If DH drops him off then it's around 8:30AM

When I drop him off I give him a sippy of milk around 6:30 while I get everything together to warm up the car. He gets breakfast there around 7:30ish

If DH drops him off then DH gives him breakfast

On weekends I give him milk around 7 - 7:30AM. He gets breakfast after

DS is 18 mos and wakes up around 6:30-7:00. He gets an 8 oz bottle when he wakes up (doesn't always finish it).

He eats breakfast at my mom's house between 9-9:30.

Some mornings I'll give him some yogurt melts or cheerios to snack on. My mom definitely gives him yogurt melts at her house while she's getting breakfast ready.

How much time do you have at home in the morning with her? If you have time, maybe give her a yogurt to tide her over until she has breakfast at your MIL's.

Thanks, we eliminated the morning bottle about a month ago on our quest to get her off bottles. She won't drink milk out of a sippy/straw cup or anything other than her beloved baba. Chat Icon

We were planning on waking her up 5-10 mins before leaving the house so she can sleep as long as possible. Do you think we should wake her earlier?

Re: FTWM of toddlers (18 months+), what do you do about breakfast on weekdays if you have to wake them up early to leave the house?

That's a tough one. Is she usually sound asleep at that time? Is there any chance of transferring her to the car asleep?

I would imagine her sleep schedule would adjust after the first week, and she might start waking earlier. When that happens, a morning yogurt might be enough to fill her tummy before the car ride.

Does she drink juice or water or anything else in the morning when she first wakes up?

Justin usually goes 1.5-2 hours between his morning bottle and breakfast. He eats breakfast later than most kids, but he never seems hungry or acts like I'm starving him.

She does transfer easily, but only at night. Once we wake her in the morning and she sees it's light out she's up. DH used to wake her around 7:45 to leave the house by 8:15 and would give her a bottle but now that she's off bottles he's been giving her a banana or fruit. Now that we're going to have to wake her by 7am i'm not sure if she's going to want to eat anything so early. She will be sound asleep when we wake her.

Loey's not 18 months yet, but I'll answer anyway Chat Icon

I leave the house with him at 6:40 so you bet that I have to wake his little tushie up! I give him a banana that I let him eat while I'm changing his diaper and getting him dressed. He finishes it while I put on my shoes and get our things together.

I wake him at 6:25 and we leave at 6:40.

I also don't feed him in the car and he eats breakfast as soon as he gets to daycare (I pack him some fruit that he can eat while they heat up his oatmeal).

i give DS dry cereal (usually kix) in a bowl and a cup of milk before we leave the house (while I'm changing his diaper, clothes, etc), then he has full breakfast when he gets to his babysitter.

On days when we have to leave early. I give DS either a cereal bar, some fruit or toast with jelly.

I give him something small. A smoothie. Strawberries. Mini pancakes. Sometimes he'll sit at the table and have cereal. Yogurt.

And sometimes if he really sleeps in, i cut up strawberries/blueberries and bring them to the sitters with a cereal bar. Chat Icon

We give Chloe a quick breakfast in the morning before daycare. it's usually either a
banana with mini waffles or yogurt. she also loves bagels w/ cream cheese. sometimes I will give her cheerios with milk, but it can be slow and messy.

Usually just some crackers, strawberries and juice. She's usually happy with that. Or maybe some cereal.

She's like us. Not big on eating a meal when just woken. Given an hour or so (usually a daycare) and she's ready to go to eat.

I never force her to eat at home. Figure she'll get it in there.

I'd probably give her a little something before leaving and then let her have her 'full' breakfast once she gets where she's going. See how it goes. If that doesn't work and she seems hungry, then I'd consider waking her up a little earlier and giving her breakfast yourself.
