fruit or veggie first?

I have so many feeding questions about doing cereal, bottles, fruits/veggies and timing everything right now I barely know where to start but I suppose we'll keep it simple for starters:

which did u start with for your LO? my ped recommends fruit but I know SO many friends whose peds said veggie... does it matter? can I alternate trying each? how the heck does this work?! (can you tell I'm overwhelmed? lol)

fruit or veggie first?

I was overwhelmed too. My pedi said it didn't matter and it doesn't. I started with orange veggies, then green and then fruit. That was just what I did and there was really no reason for it.

The only rule is to introduce one thing at a time for 3-5 days to see if there is a reaction.

Re: fruit or veggie first?

We started at 6 months. He was getting about 5 1/2oz every 3-4 hours. Now this is our schedule..

rice cereal and a bottle of about..4 oz in the am (between 8- 9. He wakes up between 7-8)

5 hours or so later.. baby food (we started with sweet potato, then butternut squash, then carrots, and now mango, next we'll move on to peas). and a 4oz bottle.

4 hrs later a 5oz bottle

bedtime (3 hrs later.. around 8-9) I nurse him so I don't know what he gets.

He STTN.

At his 6m appointment he was 17lbs.

fruit or veggie first?

I always did veggies, bc I was afraid if they taste the sweetness of fruit first, they wont want to eat the veggies.

Re: fruit or veggie first?

First off, I feel your pain! Starting solids was so confusing for me. I have been lucky to have friends who have guided me along the way. I did oatmeal cereal first at 5 months. Then a week later I started with orange vegetables followed by mild non binding fruits, then green vegetables, then whatever I could get at the grocery store that was enough for 3 small servings. By 6 months I was mixing already established tastes with novel items.

It does get easier though. Although my 7 month old DD is not a big eater (1-2oz of food and 1 tbsp of cereal with each meal if I am lucky) she eats quite a variety now. Like tonight for example, she ate braised short ribs with sweet potato, carrots, onion, and gravy puréed.

Re: fruit or veggie first?

It really doesn't matter. With DS1 I alternated veggies and fruit based on my ped's suggestion. I will do the same this time (we are starting cereal with DS2 tomorrow). I didn't go by color either. I kind of ended up doing foods I like first Chat Icon

I switched back and forth between fruits and veggies in whatever order I wanted at the time. DD preferred most veggies over fruits anyway.

It really doesn't matter which you start first. Or what order you do. Just pick a food, try it for 3 days, then choose another, and repeat.

Re: fruit or veggie first?

this is such a relief! I didn't want break any "rules" by starting one over the other so we'll just stock up on a bunch and slowly try both :) thanks everyone!

Re: fruit or veggie first?

DD - solids at 4 months
DS - tried at 4 months, not interested. Started at 6 months

I never paid attention to fruit or veggies first, it doesn't matter. My kids loved both no matter what order they got them in.

I started with Stage 1 fruits/veggies and then every 3 days I started a new one until I went though all the Stage 1 foods. Then I moved right into Stage 2, skipped Stage 3 and started them on different table foods. (pancakes, meatballs, cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs, pasta, etc)

They did GREAT with table food once they got to that point. DD was eating table foods around 6 months (had NO teeth until age 1 and did fine) and DS started with table foods around 8'ish months.

There is no one right way to introduce foods to them, go with your gut, try different things, and see what your LO likes best. If he/she seems disinterested just hold off and try again in a few weeks. Other than that, just go through the jarred fruits and as you feel more comfortable with them eating, add in table foods.
