frozen gutters ... help
our gutters are frozen, like huge block of ice frozen. with the wet weather coming, we're really concerned. our roof is very steep and the water has been pooling on our porch and freezing into a sheet of ice. short of pouring boiling water in the gutters, is there anything we can do?? thanks

I don't think there is anytime you can do.

Re: frozen gutters ... help
we had to use a hose with hot water to melt some of the ice...that's all that can be done...we had a roofer come :(

Re: frozen gutters ... help
I think it's pretty much everyone's gutters. Just bracing for the worst myself.

Re: frozen gutters ... help
We have a huge chunk of ice in one corner and DH was literally tossing cups of ice melt up there!! No idea if it actually worked or not, but I guess it was a good idea!

This happened to us too. DH was on the ladder for hours chopping it out of the gutters.

Re: frozen gutters ... help
ice melt was another thought we had.
as far as chipping goes, DH is afraid he'd wind up destroying the gutters

Re: frozen gutters ... help
what I want to know is, I know your gutters are frozen but what about the pipes that the drainage comes out of? Are they exposed or buried under snow?
B/c if they are buried, how much water can really penetrate all that ice and snow on that end as well?
That is our situation. Ours are extremely buried under feet of snow around our whole house. So even if the overhead gutters are not frozen, the exit pipes are buried in ice as well and I can't imagine water can drain that easily through that? (I could be wrong, just guessing)

Re: frozen gutters ... help
my DH went and cleared the snow from around the downspouts after the last snow. i still don't think the water has much of anywhere to go, because eventually there's snow - he couldn't clear all of the snow from the yard lol. i am guessing it's just going to pool, which makes me nervous also. idk but i guess there's really not much else to do.
