FREAKED OUT

Got into a super bad car accident this afternoon. The car is totaled. I have NEVER been in a car accident before- as the passenger or the driver. This was my very first time. And it was bad. The airbags went off and my car was so totally wrecked beyond belief. I couldn't believe I was able to take off my own seatbelt and get out of the car.

I was so worried about the baby. I spent almost 4 hours at the hospital and they think the baby is OK and i have an appointment with my own ob/gyn tomorrow for a follow-up.

I am so freaked out. It was so traumatic. I cut and bruised my knee REALLY bad, it looks terrible and also my ankle. I also got chemical scars on my neck and face. My ears are STILL ringings and painful. But I am just so happy to be alive and to see my baby on the ultrasound today.

Has anyone ever been in a car accident? Does the trauma ever go away? I feel like I will never be the same. Chat Icon I don't want to drive anymore and I def. don't want to drive the baby when it is born. I'm too scared.

Re: FREAKED OUT

Oh my god thats awful!!!! Im so glad you and the baby are okay!! Thats really scary. I got into a car accident where they had to use the jaws of life to get me out. I was okay, bruised up but nothing major. I was freaked out for a while but I started driving as soon as I got a new car. But now at every stop sign I fully stop and look a million times before pulling out, I was hit by a speeding car after I stopped and then went at a stop sign.

Again, Im so glad youre okay. Good luck at the OB tomorrow. Take it easy tonight, go home and get some restChat Icon

Re: FREAKED OUT

I am sooo sorry to hear but are happy to hear you and baby are ok! I would give yourself some time to heal, physically and mentally ~ I was in a really bad car accident years ago and it took me over a year to drive again, it might have even been closer to two years. It was hard at first but happy I was able to and I am now a "granny" driver. I drive the speed limit and in the slow lane, especially driving around DS! Re: FREAKED OUT

First, it's great to hear that you and the baby are OK...

Second, you will be very sore and will find new bruises pop up (almost out of nowhere) over the next couple of weeks. Just make sure you keep up with your follow up visits and keeping your OB informed.

As for getting over the accident, it takes time. I was in a HORRIBLE accident 15 years ago (my head hit the windshield and I broke my jaw and palate, along with a plethora of leg and knees issues) and I still have residual emotional issues with it (especially on wet/rainy/misty days). Just know that you will be ok and you will be able to move forward. Get support from family and friends. Start going out on very short trips, even it means taking the car up the block, and you will be able to progress from there.

LOTS OF HUGS AND POSITIVITY AND LIGHT TO YOU AND YOUR BABY!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: FREAKED OUT

My mom was in a bad car accident when she was pregnant with me and all turned out well... so no worries!!

I was in an accident where my car was totaled back when I was 17... All of my windows blew out and air bags deployed... I was covered in glass and so shocked and couldnt breath from the crap they put in air bags that someone had to come over and get me out of the car... Horrifying experience... And I wound up damaging my thumb pretty badly from how I was holding the steering wheel when the air bag came out... It was purple, blue, green, yellow... every freakin shade and about 3x its normal size Chat Icon

I did drive again, but of course was apprehensive.... But the trauma eventually lessens over time and you get over it... Everytime Im a passenger in a car though and feel as if I might get hit, I always brace myself for impact... Like I grab onto the car door and put my foot through the floor as if I could brake Chat Icon ... Just one of those things I guess that will never go away Chat Icon

Re: FREAKED OUT

i have been either the driver or passenger in at least 8 accidents....but only one when i was preg last year.

you will always be more paranoid but the super scary fear does go away if you talk about it kwim? or if you avoid driving for too long.

i dont know how far along you are but hopeing you and baby will be fine! if you ever want to talk fm me xoxo

Re: FREAKED OUT

Wow, that sounds so scary!!! Thank god you are okay!! You will be sore for a bit... and probably however you had the accident or wherever it happened (regardless of who was at fault) will prob make you extra cautious/nervous in that situation from now on - i got in a horrible car accident 13yrs ago where my car was totalled and i still get anxious at that intersection... or i was even in a not so bad car accident where someone came in my lane sideswiping me, i still get nervous being directly next to someone. But you WILL drive again and be just fineChat Icon your car can be replaced, its a hassle but you & baby are ok and thats ALL that matters Chat Icon

It was smart to go to the hospital and to follow up with your doctor tomorrow. I've only been in small accidents, but even from those I was shaken for a while. That is so scary! So glad that you and LO are OK. I have become the most paranoid driver. I truly hate driving and I get nervous when I know my DH or sis or parents have to drive somewhere- rain or shine. Take your time to heal and do whatever it is when you are ready. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am the SAME EXACT WAY! I was in an accident back in 2008 that was my fault. I wasn't speeding. It was rush hour and i took my foot off the gas, went to switch lanes, looked in my side mirror and the guy in front of me was stopping. It was really bright out and i couldn't really see his break lights. They were really dim. But i wound up totaling his car and the car in front of him. The impact also hit the 2 cars in front of them. This FREAKED the crap out of me. I still get paranoid to drive. It got easier over time but i hate driving. Especially with the kids in the car. I am definitely more cautious now. And everytime DH drives upstate for work, drives at night, in the rain or snow, i get super paranoid and will not rest easy until he calls me to tell me he got to his destination. Glad to hear you and baby are ok Take it easy the next few days Chat Icon

To ease your mind, my mom was in an accident when she was PG with my brother. Car was totaled and witnesses say it was a very large buck she hit. (She only saw a shadow at her side and doesn't remember much more.) Only thing that happened to my brother was that he was born with a birthmark on his butt in the shape of a deer hoof. Obviously it's unrelated to the accident, but we still laugh about it. Hopefully this made you laugh too. Chat Icon
