Found a home, but found a problem and how much to fix another problem.

Due to our lovely down payment assistance program that we need to do because it allows us to afford a home with out paying an insane amount per month for a mortgage I just realized we can not go into contract until June 2. And today we found a house we like (not love) and I bet you it will be snatched up by then!!! Grrrrr

But my main question this house has the TINIEST kitchen ever with original 1950's appliances. It has a lovely dinning room right next to it and then on the side of the house a garage. How much do you think it would be to open up into the garage and reconfigure the kitchen with out appliances? My parents redid their house but added an extension and that was included in their remodeling price so I can't figure out how much it would be for us since we're not adding another structure just opening.

I also just saw a house like this with a similar situation- maybe the same house haha! It had a pool and everything- but it needed a lot of work. I had my garage added and changed into a dining room like many houses in my neighborhood it. It can run about 10k-20k depending on how much work you do and what finishes you need.

One thing that made me not like the house that had the same things going on was is closeness to the SS Parkway and a firehouse. Since I live in the neighborhood already- I knew the traffic that occurs there. I didn't know if it was worth the price to me plus adding on a kitchen.

SORRY for all that. It can be costly!

in some towns you must have a garage and cannot convert it. my town is that way. we had to convert ours back to a garage when we bought the house.

the people across the street knocked down their detached garage because they wanted more room in the yard and they had to rebuild it.

find out about town codes before you even think about doing what you want to do.

Ahhh very interesting! Thank you for the advice. Yes it is probably the same house - i know traffic is bad over there and I wasn't a fan of the location and the kitchen. Everything else was fine with the house.

I think I had that initial oh my god this house actually functions and we should get it but as I think about it - too much money involved to fix it when there is another house where we really want to be just on the small side but not on a highway and it needs updates but nothing that would "have to" get done now.

yea it west babylon. We really didn't look look at the nitty gritties since we don't know much. Our brother in law who is a Mr. Fix it we are going to take with us when we find a home for a second visit before putting an offer in since he could tell us a bit of what to hear from the official inspector.
