formula and vitamins

I gave my DS pumped breast milk and supp with formula for the first 6 weeks. At the time, my ped had me giving him TriViSol vitamins. At our last visit, I told her that I was solely doing formula now and she said I no longer had to give him the vitamins. My SIL said she gives her twins vitamins still and they are FF too. Now I'm confused. I know the formula itself has vitamins in it. So my question is for those of you that FF, do you give your DC vitamins too?

Re: formula and vitamins

My doctor just told me to start DS (FF only) on them at 4 months. He said it's good esp. now that it's winter and there are more viruses around.

no - no vitamins here. think of who you are comparing yourself to and stop there...(inside joke).

but seriously - they were VERY premature - that could have something to do with it!

Yeah.... I agree with this my dear! No vitamins. However, we were given a script for vitamins and Samantha's 6 month visit (that I have yet to take care of...Chat Icon ) She could be referring to those vitamins. They are 6 months now right?

And to reiterate what Jess said... STOP comparing...... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: formula and vitamins

Jen- as you know we just started formula and we are still giving DS vitamins because we were when he was BFing. I will ask the doctor about it next time we go. For now, I am going to continue to give them to him.

Re: formula and vitamins

I BF for the first month and then DS was FF ~ he has been on the liquid vitamins since his first tooth came in (with the floride) and will be on them until he is 2 (these vitamins are the prescription vitamins)

Re: formula and vitamins

FF..some peds say 6 mths, some say one year.

Generally, most peds prescribe it at 6 mths b/c if they want you to have the fluoride, that's the only way it can come (with vitamins). But if you don't want to give fluoride or have it in your water, you can wait until one year b/c formula DOES have all the vitamins a child will need.

At one year, once on milk, all children are suggested to take a vitamin daily.

Re: formula and vitamins

My Ped told me the same thing.

I BF for 7 1/2 weeks. During that time, they wanted me to give him Trivisol with Iron.

Once I switched to formula all the time, I called the office and they said I didn't need to give him Trivisol anymore.

Re: formula and vitamins

At 6mo they gave it to us. I never even thought to question it. Vitamins just seemed like the thing to do. She wasnt a great eater so I think I felt it helped.

At 1yr we stopped. She eats better and a much wider variety.

FF from 11days to one year

Re: formula and vitamins

THe reason for the vitamins is for the flouride. At 6mths all babies should be on vitamins b/c - regardless of formula/breastfeed (this is a recommendation from the AAP). Formula intake starts to decrease at this age as food intake increases.

I prefer tri vi sol over poly b/c formula fed babies don't have to worry about the B vitamins

True.

My DD is not on them now (She's now FF only, used to be BF and took them then)
