For those who are married: Is Marriage Harder or Easier than you thought it would be?

I know everyone says marriage is hard work, but I don't think I was really prepared for it until I experienced it myself. I do find it really hard at times - but I also didn't expect it to be as rewarding. It's funny, but we just had a huge fight this weekend and when we made up I felt such a sense of accomplishment! For us it has been harder. We are very independant people and it has been very hard to "come" together. we are working at it.

It has been easier than I expected. I was the last of my friends and family to marry, so I spent a lot of time observing the marriages around me. Even though I wasn't privvy to a lot of personal stuff, I still learned a lot. And I thought we'd have to do a lot more compromising. We communicate really well- it helps a lot that he is one of the least judgemental people I've met. That makes it easier for me to open up. I also think it helped that we were a little older- this was something we really wanted and had waited for.

I have been married for 13 years and some things get easier and some things are still hard (money, family, kids). It is an ongoing relationship so there will always be disagreements and difficulties but after so much time together, you get through them because you know the person better.
(We have known each other 18 years this year).

we have been together for so long (16 years) i kind of don't remember NOT being married, but we just "gel" so nicely that I think our marriage comes very easily for us.

I think marriage is easier than I had anticipated. Perhaps if we had a house/children things would be different. For now, we are happy and content with each other. Though we argue like any normal married couple, we are quick to make up and move on.

I hope it is always like this. Chat Icon

We were together 7 years before we got married, and lived together for two. It was a pretty easy transition. We don't have children, and I woud imagine my answer would change if we did.

i think our dating relationship was MUCH harder than being married. there was so much adjustment and compromise to be made, it was very difficult at times.

Now, he's absolutely my best friend, compromise comes alot easier, and overall - it's just so much easier than i thought it would be. Chat Icon

The first few months were rough (more on my part)...just getting used to the fact that it is a partnership, there's give and take, and that not everything can be perfect all the time.

Re: For those who are married: Is Marriage Harder or Easier than you thought it would be?

Marriage was easier than I thought it would be, probably because I was the WORST commitment phobe when it came to marriage. Never wanted it, never liked the concept. And, I guess it didn't help that I was in 2 pretty awful long-term relationships before I met DH so my marriage to DH is a breeze in comparison.

BUT, having a baby... now THAT is a LOT harder than I thought it would be, especially the strain on our marriage for the first 2-3 months... things are much better now, but in the beginning, it was REALLY hard

Same here. The first couple of months I had a hard time with the adjustment. I definately had a different idea in my head as to what newlywed life was going to be like. It was much harder than I thought. But the past few months have gotten much easier as we learn to live with eachother.

Easier...For me the most difficult part is splitting our time/holidays between two families. I feel torn much of the time and whatever we wind up doing I feel guilty. Chat Icon I don't think I was meant to be single...I hated dating, so I just love living with DH and having someone (and very glad that someone is him LOL!).

I think its everything else that comes into play is what can be difficult- like more bills, responsibility, etc.

Harder. We will be married one year next month. It's not so much the marriage as it is the house. Spliting the responsiblities in the house and not feeling like one does more work is what I have a hard time with.

Harder than I thought it would be. To me, some things seem common sense...but to him, they don't, so learning to compromise has been an issue for both of us. We are both so independant and lived alone for so long...I think that is the problem with meeting and getting married later in life.

I so could have written that too! DH and I talk about that common sense issue all the time. What I see as common sense, doesn't with him.

I had a rough time with splitting the holidays when we first got married. We decided to just make it clear to both families that we would alternate every year....one year would be Thanksgiving with DH's family, next year would be with my family, etc. It makes things so much easier as both sets of families know what we are doing ahead of time and never put us in a predicament to choose!
