Re: for those that have moved out of state?
We have not moved yet but we will be living like rock stars! DH will keep his job in NY and work from home, he will have to fly back once a week for a meeting. Hopefully I will get my dream job...so that will be awesome.
We can afford a house!! Unlike NY, where we live in a condo. Baby BK will have a yard!

Re: for those that have moved out of state?
We did not move, but looked around and DH would make so much less that though we could buy a home for much less, we certainly wouldn't be living like rockstars, and with lower salaries would want to contribute a greater percentage to retirement, which would make day-to-day living even more difficult.
I would want the same amount in retirement regardless of where we live.

We are moving in May...after DH graduates (don't ask).....to wonderful North Carolina. DH asked his boss hypothetically if he could work from OOS and his boss flipped out about he could not lose DH and of course he could work from OOS. So they have already started to work out an agreement. As I have posted before and I am not ashamed to post again...my dream job is to continue in my field with a racing company. DEI, Ganassi, Evernham, Hendricks, Roush, Waltrip, Petty....I am not picky.

Re: for those that have moved out of state?
We are renting a really great 2 bedroom for under 800.00 a month. Washer/dryer/balcony/pool/fitness center...great neighborhood.
Our car insurance is 71.00 a month total, for 2 new cars full coverage.
DH's salary stayed the same.
I haven't worked since moving.
DH's commute will only be a 20 minute drive, we were both spending 40.00 a week on metrocards in NY. Gas money is nothing compared to our metrocard allowance.
Also, we just purchased NBA tickets..you would not believe the price! We got 20.00 seats that aren't bad at all. We wanted to spluge, but not sure if DH can get the days off or not.
Groceries, still the same price. Going out to eat though is slightly cheaper.
ETA: we will be moving to a great school district. In SI, I would have been forced into catholic school..here catholic school would be by choice

why would you be ashamed? that is FANTASTIC!
I wonder how skewed this poll will turn out though
people might respond based on assumptions. unless you've actually lived OOS, you can't speculate.

Thats what I mean... yes housing is cheaper no doubt about it but the salaries are lower so is there really a difference in how comfortable you are? If you can bring a new york salary to lets say- NC, then you would be living like a rockstar but not many people have that opportunity.

Can I get a hip hip hoooooray for NC? I love that place and cannot wait to be your neighbor...even if its another town.

I moved here from Ohio...so I remember what it was like to live on a Limited Express salary in college. That was ugly...thank goodness for 25 cent pitcher night at the bars.
ETA: I did not vote b/c I have not actually moved. Put your flame torches away.. . I was just offering my perspective.

DH still thinks NC is my dillusion of grander, but it was "his" idea. Which means it must be great!

I know but I just wanted to explain so no one got the wrong idea. I offered my personal perspective in lieu of a vote.

Re: for those that have moved out of state?
We are MUCH better off financially. DH's promotion is a big part of it, but he could not have gotten this position in NY. I'm not sure the cost of living is that much cheaper here in the city (Chicago) but the suburbs do look more affordable than LI. And we are living practically in the heart of the city for the same cost of suburban life in NY.

Right now, we're great. If DH loses his job, we wont' be so much. But God never gives us more than we can handle...and I have faith we'll be OK.

Re: for those that have moved out of state?
we live in boston... so salaries are pretty good...a little less then nyc...but the condos in downtown are getting very expensive...we like living in downtown so we spend a lot of money on housing
there areas that are cheaper but they are "up and coming" neighbohoods and have been that way for 10 years - and long commutes to the city
plus everyone seems to send their kids to private school up here so if we have kids that is another expense

Funny, cause I wrote "a city job in NYC" and edited it because I didn't want to convey that I worked for the city! But that's what you meant!
Yes, you're right. DH's brother works for the MTA and he's never leaving NY.
