FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us

Teachers' hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or 10 months a year! It's time we put thing in perspective and pay them for what they do - babysit! We can get that for minimum wage. That's right. Let's give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school. That ...would be $19.50 a day (7:45 to......... 3:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch and plan-- that equals 6 1/2 hours). Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children. Now how many students do they teach in a day...maybe 30? So that's $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations. LET'S SEE.... That's $585 X 180= $105,300 per year. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries). What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year. Wait a minute -- there's something wrong here! There sure is!

The average teacher's salary (nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days = $277.77/per day/30 students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student--a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!) WHAT A DEAL!!!!

Heaven forbid we take into account highly qualified teachers or NCLB...

Make a teacher smile; re-post this to show appreciation all you out there!

I have great respect for teachers. But in this area, I do not know any teachers making 50k, it's much more. I don't have an issue with the salaries, I think they are very well deserved. Pension costs are out of control , it needs to end. One major concern I have, our kids are not well educated compared many other countries in the world. Way Too much time out of the classroom, our children are not advancing as they should.

Re: FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us

I give teachers all the credit in the world... that is a HARD job... and teachers deserve their vacation time & a good salary.... I would never blame the teacher for the student's shortcomings... there are too many things that are out of your control. It's easy to use the teacher as a scapegoat, but it's not accurate. I give a huge Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to the teachers out there who do it day in day out year after year & put your heart & soul into it despite all you have working against you & despite all the blame! It's much more than an 8-3 job, it's a lifestyle that most people (including myself) couldn't handle!! And that's the truth!!!

Honestly, in my district, time out of classroom is not the teachers fault. It can be for special Ed interventions, counseling etc. I myself am pulled from my room all too often for workshops and training days, again, not my choice. There are way too many factors that I feel affect student performance and none of them have to do with my teaching.

Re: FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us

Just as an aside, that also has nothing to do with teachers IMHO, is that many young adults are not advancing as they should, because they don't have anything to advance into these days.

College tuition costs are out of control and good jobs are few and far between.

It doesn't take a genius to realize this.

It's the same for many older adults who have YEARS of experience, having to take jobs in the 40K range AND work 12+ hour days and weekends.

Just sayin'.

I have no problem with teacher salaries on LI, I have a major problem with the nepotism and cronyism running rampant in the hiring process.

I have to agree. And if you broke down my salary and compared it to how many clients I serve in a day it would be similar.

I don't bash teachers but I also don't complain about yhe career path I choose. Accept the pros and cons about your career an move on.

I'll be honest...I see SO MANY POSTS on FB constantly about things like this. About teachers and salaries and underpaid, mistreated etc...I might be naive..but is it REALLY that bad??? I have a few friends that are teachers..some in MD some in NY..their salaries are quite nice (over 100K in some situations but not saying that is always the norm..). Most love their job and say they make good money.

I do know and understand that teachers work hard. That their day doesn't just stop when they leave their classroom. And I appreciate all good teachers, lord knows we need them!!! But I read so much negativity about their job and how underpaid they are, and on and on...I mean, not many jobs out there allow for a summer off, nice holiday time vacations etc...

Am I truly missing something?? I don't mean to upset anyone, I guess I'm just curious. A lot of my teacher friends LOVE what they do and think they have a great deal. And others are miserable. Just so odd to me.

Re: FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us

I am guessing that some environments probably really suck.

I can understand that from having worked in social services for many years.

Personally, I have found though that there are some people who you have to wonder if they just woke up one day and were like "I guess I'll be a teacher", who in turn, appear the most miserable.

I also think like anything else, if this is all you know, many will complain about it.

I just left a really bad working environment for my "dream" employer and have yet to find anything to complain about.

I have noticed the people who complain the most, have only worked for this employer for most of their professional career.

ETA: I am also only talking about teachers I know personally. A few have been in the profession since the late 90's and also seem VERY burnt out.

But again, that happens in EVERY field, not just teaching IMHO.

Re: FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us

My husband is a teacher and makes less than this for sure. And still works on weekends and at length on weeknights. He tells me all the time that ABSOLUTELY not all of his co-workers put in the hours and extra-effort that he does.

... so if you're a teacher reading this (or the spouse of one) and think 'yeah but I (or my husband/wife) do-- chances are you/they know plenty of other teachers who they have to pick up the slack for.

The only way I'd ever tell anyone to become a teacher is if you REALLY want to teach kids and are willing to have your life and home taken over by paper work, deal with parents complaining about all kinds of crap that is out of your control, work way beyond the normal 'teacher's hours' that people love to say they wish they had and are overall willing to not be compensated for a mess ton of work you do.

It is NOT the job I always figured it was like...

And I don't think it's the job that teachers had when I was a kid.

Things teachers have to deal with now -- BS from administration, parents and the kids themselves -- aren't the same issues that existed before.

Chat Icon That being said -- my husband DOES love to teach and while he has plenty of complaints here and there (just like I think we all do about our jobs) -- he is happy to have a job. And if you have a job, teaching or otherwise... at this time, in this world -- be happy.

I don't think it is about being underpaid. I think it is about having to always defend what they make. People are constantly talking about how teachers are overpaid for working part-time.

I am a city teacher and never complain about how much I make. I love my job and am very lucky to be able to do something I love.

FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us

I'm all for teachers and them making a decent pay. I know they have it tough at times. I know many (especially in NY) feel under scrutiny for their salaries. What has been posted in the OP is what I hear all the time.

I have been reminded that:

-teachers may be off in the summer/holiday vacations, but they work late most days or at home, prepping lesson plans

-they have to attend conferences/advance their degrees/etc

-they are underpaid in most cases

-they don't feel appreciated

-they don't have the funding and have to pay for material out of pocket for their classrooms

............and I get all of that. It's all true.

On the other side of the coin, the private sector isn't all that different.

Many work way more hours than a 40 hour work week. It's the norm these days. I think I know one person who works only 40 hours..most work more. Many have to attend professional development classes and take courses to advance - or Masters degrees - sometimes this is mandatory. Some have to take online training courses or refreshers. Many are underpaid. Many also can't just go on a vacation without being still attached to a Blackberry, checking & answering e-mails at all hours of the day. You also can face layoffs or have no protection from a Union. Your health and dental benefits may be zilch. You may not even get a pension or access to a 401k. You may be taking on a ton more work than you signed up for, because staffing is low due to the economy, and your job description became miles longer than it originally was - all with no additional pay.

Usually the response will then be, "Well, that may be true, but your job isn't criticized or bashed on a daily basis. No one questions if you deserve your salary. Bloomberg isn't making your life hell. Your name and salary isn't posted in the papers, either!"

Which can be true - but if your a CEO or high-ranking person in an industry, you're always under a microscope for your salary and if you should deserve it. You have to answer to investors. Your salary and bonus is also made public. Employees have a tendency to wonder why the boss is making X amount and usually think they don't deserve it.

So, all in all, I think teachers and their struggles are not all that different than someone in the private sector. I'm not saying their struggles aren't noteworthy or legit...they are.

...........They just aren't that unique, when you think about it.

I'm all for teachers and I appreciate the good ones. The same way I can appreciate a doctor who goes above and beyond..or anyone, for that matter.

I think many feel that it gets tiresome when teachers have to constantly justify why they get paid what they do or justify why they should get paid more. Anyone can do that, no matter his or her position in an industry, KWIM? Private, public, whatever...teacher, military, accountant, nurse, etc.

I have seen the thing the OP posted on FB before...usually with a comment like "This is for anyone who is jealous of our summers off!" It just doesn't help their case, KWIM?

Every job has its positives & negatives. No one person has it easy. I'm willing to bet if you were to poll this site, most would say they are underpaid for the work that they are expected to do, ya know?

(I say this all with no snark, by the way..........I can still remember and love some of the teachers I had growing up and the impact they had on me)

It is NOT the job I always figured it was like...

And I don't think it's the job that teachers had when I was a kid.

It isn't the same job that I had 7 years ago.

I am going into my 12th year of teaching and the attitude kids have today (I teach high school) is completely different than when I started. They have no respect for teachers and have the biggest sense of entitlement. They do not want to do the work and when you call home their parents are very defensive or they never call you back. (Not all parents but a lot) They talk back, curse and don't even get me started on the cell phones. Student don't want to work hard for their grades, they just want you do give them the A or B.

And you know what?

Some teachers do because it is all about pass rates and test scores. It is about common core and credit accumulation. It is not about Shakespeare, The Great Gatsby or how to write a well developed essay. It is about what YOU did wrong that Susie and Johnny are failing, not about what they did wrong.....or the fact that they did not work at all.

People are always talking about how the quality of education in the US is going down. Perhaps they should be looking beyond the teachers and at themselves as well.

Even with that all said I still love my job because there are a lot of great kids that make up for the really difficult ones.

50,000 in a lot of parts of the country is a GREAT salary.

In a lot of parts of LI its simply just not enough. Especially considering teachers have to get a master's usually so probably are accruing more and more student loan debt.

There's NO justifiable reason why a TEACHER shouldn't be making enough money to be able to afford a decent house in the area in which they teach.

And that is too often the case here.

Except the same can be said for most professions. I'm a public interest lawyer and have been working for about 5 years. My fellow students who went to work in a big firm after law school made more than twice what I make now after 5 years when they were in their first year.

I, too, have an often thankless, highly stressful job. I work late/take work home with me all. The. Time. I don't get paid any extra for that. People would literally be homeless without the work that I do.

But, at the same time, I knew what I was getting into. I knew what the salary would be, I knew what the hours and stress would be. Can't the same be expected for teachers to know too? As an adult going into a profession, I think it is perfectly reasonable to expect that they do their homework, so to speak, and then not complain about what they knowingly got themselves into.

I certainly think that teachers should be more fairly compensated, but I think that plenty of people in plenty of other professions should be more fairly compensated.

That said, I can't tell you how many teachers I see posting on facebook, complaining that they don't get paid on enough and then the next second posting a countown for their next vacation, or how they have summers off, etc. I think that perpetuates the cycle of peoples' impressions of teachers.

I agree! 50,000 is a great salary even on Long Island. I think the problem is that people over extend themselves here so much that they think they need more to live here. I have a single friend that makes a little less than that and just bought a condo on her own. She lives within her means and saves her money.
