Food questions

DD is almost 9 months old. She had a bad bought with ear infections for 2 months and finally had tubes placed this week. She's very much on the mend and the surgery went well.

With this said, we were hesitant while she was struggling with the stubborn final double ear infection to introduce a lot of new stuff (foodwise). She's done well on all different types of babyfood - stage 2 (occassionally something stage 1 will sneak in due to lack of availability of the same food in stage 2 and I'll mix it with a stage 2 food of a different variety - i.e. stage 2 green beans mixed with stage one sweet potatoes - sounds gross, but she loves it).

We did attempt a cherio or 2 last week and she gagged on it. Doc said to wait until she's feeling better and try again. Should we be doing other solids too? I read an article on line that she should have had peeled sliced apples as early as 6 month old Chat Icon. No one told me to do that and she was probably too ill to deal with it anyway. In the last few weeks leading up to the surgery we did a lot of fruit and yogurt as she was on so many different antibiotics she needed the acidopholis (sp?). I want to catch her back up to speed. Daycare hasn't asked about these types of offerings and I usually follow the other kids her age and what they are eating. She hates apple juice I discovered after the surgery and I wasn't a big fan of juices for kids anyway. I do have a juicer and thought an occassional dessert or treat could be a glass of juice as she gets older. Anyway, just wanted to know where to start and how badly behind we are if at all. Is gagging normal the first few times? She did "chew" (more like gummed) the cherio, but then gagged on the swallow... then she just played with the others, more ended up on the floor than in her mouth.

TIA!

Re: Food questions

I don't think she is that behind IMO. I never heard of appleslices at 6 month though! Chat Icon My Ped said cheese and yogurt could be started at 9 months along with puffs or cheerios. I would start with puffs and cut them in half and see if she can manage that then take it from there. She will be eating in no time. I hope your little one feels better soon.

Re: Food questions

Cool, I thought it was odd that my pediatrician didn't tell me to do such solids at 6 months. Guess it's true, can't trust everything you read Chat Icon
