food for thought ... csection article

DH sent this to me yesterday, pretty interesting.

"C-section rates around globe at 'epidemic' levels
Nearly half of all births in China are delivered by cesarean section, the world's highest rate according to a survey by the World Health Organization, which warned Tuesday that a boom in unnecessary surgeries is jeopardizing women's health."

Re: food for thought ... csection article

My Dh showed me this in Newsday last week.
It's alarming in China- they are just letting women elect C-sections for the heck of it. Like it's nothing.
The Dr's there like it because it's planned and they aren't getting called to the hospital in the middle of the night etc.
It's actaully a bit scary

in many countries women can just elect for no medically neccesary reason. I was speaking with a woman from Brazil and she said that almost all women elect to have csections Chat Icon some even at 36 weeks!

Re: food for thought ... csection article

You can elect here as well. Many Hollywood women do it, as well as very wealthy businesswomen who don't want childbirth to interfere with big business deals or other plans.

I was shocked to hear that my c-section is called an elective C section. Although mine was elected for medical reasons.

Wow and you would think that the insurance companies would balk at that and deny the claim.
But I guess if you are that wealthy like movie stars you just pay out of pocket.

My c section was elective. Personally I see no problem with it as long as you know the risks and make a well informed decision!

I was watching CNN and they had a report on a woman who was in labor and the baby wasnt moving downward and the woman needed a csection.. the nurse sat on her stomach to help the baby move downward (VENT#$%&^@&#%@!%!%!%!(%$!%#$#!%$) and the woman wound up rupturing from it and the baby died from that ...the womans family didnt have enough money for the csection she needed to now remove this rotting corpse inside of her so the reporters got the money together for her to have the csection ( which was only like $300 us) gave the money to the dr and the dr never came back that night to do the precedure...they came back in the morning to find her urine bag overflowing and the infection killed her that morning...goes to show how LUCKY we are to have the healthcare we do Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Its UNREAL the stuff that goes on outside of us Chat Icon

A lot apparently do cover it. I don't think the Hollywood and wealthier groups really worry about the cost vs. convenience.

I think with mine it is elected for medical necessity, which is why it is covered. Confusing. All I know is that it is covered.

I swear to you if I lived in some of those countries I wuold want my tubes tied!
I can't imagine having a baby in a place like that! Chat Icon
I will never forgot reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and the girl was having a baby in Afghanistan and needed a C section but there was no anasthesia available. So they did it with NO anasthesia! Chat Icon
I had nightmares for weeks after that part of the book!

As long as your insurance covers it or you pay OOP they probably would do it.

believe me I was scared to ask bc I thought they would think I was nuts. she did for a minute until I explained why I wanted one. Then I asked my other doc who chose to elect c section for her own child so she supported my decision. oh and I was willing to pay OOP, that's how badly I did not want V birth but the insurance covered it

I saw that news report on CNN so sad , I can't remember what country tho I'm thinking Africa? not sure

also in Peru 27 percent of deaths of women from pregnancy-related causes occurred during pregnancy; 26 percent occurred during the birth itself; and 46 percent during the first six weeks after giving birth. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Trust me this thought has crossed my mind since my BFP
I feel like for emotional and physciological reasons I would need one.
But then I go back and forth because I think I am just as scared of a major surgery.
In my mind, there is NO good way to get this baby out.
I might just keep it in! Chat Icon

I am so right there. I want to have a c b/c I am scared to death of labor and pushing (especially the "ring of fire" and tearing). I want to have a v b/c I am scared to death of the surgery (especially the being awake part). It is so true that there is no good way to get this baby out...Chat Icon

Re: food for thought ... csection article

I have no doubt in my mind that if you asked your OB for an elective C-section that they would give you one. I really have very little faith in a lot of MD's anymore. Their malpractice insurance is ridiculous nowadays and they need to make up the difference somehow. They make double the $$ from a C then from a vaginal birth.

Re: food for thought ... csection article

my OB will NOT do an elective c-section w/o a clear medical need. he may be in the minority though.
