Folic Acid

How much folic acid does everyone here take? I take a daily prenatal that has 800 mcg of folic acid. Does anyone use a folic acid supplement in addition to prenatals? My ob-gyn just told me to take pre-natals while TTC. I asked her which brand and she said it doesn't matter as long as they are prenatals.

Also, my prenatal says 800 mcg of "folate as folic acid." Is this common? I know folate is the form that is in food and folic acid is the form that's found in vitamins so I just want to be sure I'm taking folic acid and not folate..if that makes sense.

Thanks.

I think they want at least 400mcg. Mine is 800 as well. I take a natural brand from whole foods. Rainbow something or other. It's too early for me to remember lolChat Icon

Re: Folic Acid

The one my RE recommended has 1mg. They are only $20 for a 3 month supply. They aren't huge like some of the others and they never make me nauseous if I happen to take it on an empty stomach. That's the prenatals. They also have one for when you get preg that has DHA in it, and extra vitamins for pregnancy.

This is what the CDC recommends for daily folic acid intake...

I take the Target brand and it has 800 mcg as well. I don't take another supplement. 800 is plenty.

I take an extra folic acid pill and probably take "too much" but we have spinabifida in the family so I wanted to be extra safe, plus I was on lithium right before we started to try and conceive for headaches.

Apparently you can't OD on folic acid. Whatever your body doesn't need you will pee out anyway.

Re: Folic Acid

My doctor just prescribed a prenatal vitamin that has 1mg of folate. She said I can take an additional 400 mcg of folic acid (over the counter vitamin), but I think the 100mg is enough for now since I get folic acid naturally from my diet with juicing.

Folic Acid

My body does not properly absorb folic acid, so I take a prescription b6/b12 supplement
