folic acid?
i keep hearing good things about folic acid supplements and TTC.
i have been taking a regular multivitamin for years now. i just looked at the bottle and it already provides 100% of the recommended folic acid. its not a prenatal vitamin specifically, just the vitamin shops women's mega multi.
so should i be taking a specific folic acid supplement on top of the multi? i noticed that some specific prenatal vitamins contain 200% of your daily recommended dose - (although i have never understood the purpose or benefit of providing anything over 100% of the daily recommended dose of anything - although most multis do )

Re: folic acid?
It may be 100% for a non-pregnant woman. Is it 400 or 800? I think its better to be at 800 or 1000 if you are TTC.

Re: folic acid?
My dr. said it needs to have at least 1 mg, which most prescription prenatals have. I had bought OTC prenatals from target, and I showed them to him, and he said that the 800 mc that it had wasn't enough and wrote me a prescription for 1mg of folic acid to take with it. Since you are TTC, I think you are absolutely fine with an OTC prenatal vitamin until your OB appt. When our parents had us, that was all they had, and we are fine :)

Re: folic acid?
You'll get different opinions on this. My doctor said it was fine to take a regular multivitamin while TTC. I started taking OTC prnatal vitamins once I got pregnant.

Re: folic acid?
even prior to my bfp - i was taking a pre-natal vitamin and a folic acid supplement.
Dave was/is ALSO taking it.....as it's shown to reduce birth defects in sperm for 'older' men....(dave is 39).
