Flying with an ear infection?

I'm just wondering how this went for anyone that went through it. DS gets chronic ear infections and he's going to a specialist to see if we should get the tubes. But I don't think we'll be through all of that before we fly and I'm concerned there's a good chance he'll have one around then. Is there anything you can do to make them more comfortable? Can the doc prescribe something more aggressive to help clear it up quicker?

Actually, can they even fly with an ear infection, or can that do something to their ear drums?

Re: Flying with an ear infection?

DS had an ear infection right before we were supposed to fly. The Dr made me come in the day before we left to get the clearance to get on the plane. He said that a bad infection mixed with the pressure on the plane could do real damage to the ear drums. Luckily he was ok to go!!!

Re: Flying with an ear infection?

I just did this last week. I went to Ped the day befoer flight to make sure the ear was on the mend from his ear infection. It was, but still pink, so they had me give him Motrin for the flight. DS did GREAT...no crying, but I made sure he was sucking on the way up. He was alseep on the way down, and no ill effects.

The Doc did mention she could give a heavy dose of antibiotic if the ear was not as clear as it was before we flew.
