Need opinions on flying and ear infection
DD has had a persistent ear infection...it didn't respond to the first antibiotic that she was on, and now she is 6 days into a new antibiotic, and it is 50% better, but not completely gone. She has a temperature of 99.7%.
We are supposed to fly to Florida this Saturday to stay with the ILs for a week. DD's Ped said that personally she wouldn't fly, but she gave us some more antibiotics in case I decide to still fly with DD. She said the ear infection isn't horrible, but it's not cleared up yet either. We have an appt with the ENT Dr. this Thursday.
What would you do? Should I fly with her? Her mood is fine...I wouldn't have even known she has an ear infection unless I had taken her in for a regular checkup 2 weeks ago.
Need opinions - I want to take her...DH is on the fence.

Re: Need opinions on flying and ear infection
I have never dealt with ear infections, but my gut says I would fly.
If 50% healed and its only Monday, I think you have a great shot of it clearing.

Re: Need opinions on flying and ear infection
I have flown with an ear infection before and it is one of the most horrible feelings. I would wait until Friday to determine how she is doing and then make a decision. I wouldn't want to put my child through the pain unless it was absolutely necessary. Hope she gets better soon.

Re: Need opinions on flying and ear infection
Poor thing!!! I've flown w/ a bad head cold, not an ear infection, and that was pretty painful...When we were in LA last year for a few weeks, DD got sick & I took her to a Dr. there, wanted to make sure her ears were ok for flying that week...She gave me some kind of numbing drops for DD's ears, so she wouldn't feel the pain during liftoff. Maybe you can ask your Dr. about the drops? Sorry I can't remember the name.

Re: Need opinions on flying and ear infection
When we flew to Florida in September, DS was still dealing with an ear infection. The ped was fine with going and made sure to give him a stronger dose...also had us come in the day before we left to check him out. He told us to definitely bring tylenol and motrin to have on hand if DS was feverish or complaining to hold him over until we could get to a doctor.
DS was fine.
Good Luck!

ITA...I'd go back to the ped on Friday and see how it is. If it's not fully cleared then, I'd personally not fly.

Re: Need opinions on flying and ear infection
I would not fly if she still has any sign of the ear infection. It is recommended that you not fly with ear infections b.c I believe there can be a risk of rupture as well as bad ear pain. I have flown with sinus infections and no ear infection and my ears really hurt I can only imagine a child doing this.
However you still have a bit until Sat for her to get better so maybe you should wait until you see the ENT and see if it has resolved and what the ENT thinks.

Re: Need opinions on flying and ear infection
I do not think I would fly unless she is showing signs of improvement. Over thanksgiving, I flew with a little bit of an ear infection and I have to say the pain was horrible. After the flight I could not hear properly for 2-3 days even though I was on antibiotics at the time. I feel like if it hurt me so much as an adult I cannot imagine a baby...

Thanks all for your advice.
I'm going to wait to see what ENT says on Thursday and we'll make the final decision from there.

That's what I would do also. Hopefully she'll be better by then.

I agree, I did it once and it felt liek someone was sticking needles into my ear drum. I am still scared from that memory and it was nearly 9 years ago!
