Flying with a Lap Infant

I like to get DD a seat when we fly, but I was late booking our flight so there weren't enough seats available for us to get her a seat, so she will be a lap baby for the flight.

My question is, how does the car seat get down there if she is a lap baby? Do I check it with my luggage, or can I check it at the gate? I got one of those wheely things for the car seat, but wasn't sure if it was allowed to be checked at the gate.

Anyone know?

Last time we flew with car seats we checked them at check in. I would bring a clear large plastic garbage bag to put the seat inside of and tag the bag. If you can remove any straps or tighten them so they don't get caught and torn I would do that. Also from experience - use AMEX to make your reservation. If they ruin your car seat they don't replace it. Some AMEX cards will provide additional insurance for free and get it replaced. The airline broke our stroller and there is no recourse against them...

You can either check it at check in or at the gate - whichever is easiest for you.

Are you renting a car, because you know you can rent a car seat, right? We have flown three times (round trip) and DD was a lap infant on all flights and we didn't bring the car seat. On our trip that we just went on they had cabs at the airport that had car seats in them.

We checked it with our luggage so we wouldn't have to drag it through the airport. We got a nice padded bag for it. And it doesn't count as a bag, so no fees for it.
