Flu vaccine for babies... why no?

I did a forum search for vaccines because my 10mo old twins go to the ped. tomorrow for their checkup, which, IIRC, includes the flu vaccine. I noticed that many of you have said "no, my kids aren't getting the flu shot". Please tell me what you know- I may not get the shot tomorrow. My babies do see other children at mommy and me programs, but they don't attend daycare etc.

I read all of the CDC and AAP recommendations for the flu shot, but I have to have some evidence if I am going to say "no" to it.

Thanks so much~ Chat Icon

Get them the flu shot. Better safe than sorry.

If you haven't found any evidence why are you going to decline it?

My son is 6 mos old and he just had his flu shot today. With my DD in Kindergarten this year I felt it was especially necessary for him to have it.

I was thrilled that my preemie triplets were exactly 6 months December of last year and could therefore receive the flu shot. Some people are wary of vaccines. I was too, but the fear of my children being harmed by preventable disease (times 3! Or times 2 in your case) won out. The thought of caring for multiples with the flu was enough alone! Plus My best friend of 28 years is a pediatrician and I trust her completely, and she feels the anti vaccine stuff is bogus. It's natural to be afraid as a mom when it comes to vaccines but I jut hold my breath and do it. Good luck.

Flu vaccine for babies... why no?

Some people are wary because of some of the ingredients in the flu shot ( read the insert ) in especially in very young children with immature immune systems. The also talk about the fact that it is only 60 to 70 percent effective and some babies don't react we'll to it. Ultimately, you should do what you feel comfortable with as a mom.

Thanks so much for your responses. I wasn't really wary... just nervous that I had missed something in terms of medical research, since so many people refuse to give their children the flu vaccine.
They'll be getting their flu vaccine today and I will be getting one too! Chat Icon
