FLIES!

Ewwwwww.
I have a bush on the side of my driveway- SWARMING with flies. Not gnats- full sized, house/horse flies, whatever.
The kind of flies that infest decaying flesh.
It is so bad, I am not even kidding.
Now, about 5 feet from that bush is my garbage, but the infestation is completely centered around this bush.

I can not handle how many times I am saying bush.

Anyway- are there and plants that attract flies like that? Or do I have to own up to the fact that there is very likely something dead underneath it?

I do NOT want to check. It's pretty dense, and as I mentioned, swarming with thousands of nasties.

But if I must, I must.

Are there any spray treatments I can apply to kill these flies?
eww.

Re: FLIES!

You said bush

ETA: I feel like you must investigate further. Especially since they are ignoring your garbage and just centered around the bush.

Re: FLIES!

How did I know it would be you?

Maybe you can check out my bush.

In all seriousness, I am sure an investigation needs to happen.
About as sure as I am that my darling husband will not do it.

How could I have not smelled the death?

Re: FLIES!

call the bush whacker

eventually, what/who ever is dead in your bush will decay -

so your options are:

wait for that to happen and deal with the flies

or

tell your husband he has to check that shite out

I think it's like in the rule book anyways, if you suspect there is something dead on the property the husband has to investigate. That is not verbatim of course, but I know it's there.

Bush.

Re: FLIES!

First - move your garbage away - if you have a side patio, or place it in front of a garage on the opposite side from where it is.

This may be attracting the problem (DH and I keep ours in our garage and only take it out on garbage day and haven't had any problems.

Secondly, maybe the previous owners buried their dead pet in the area and it's attracting the flies.

Wear gloves and go into the soil area where the plant is and dig around - maybe some garbage got loose and feel in the area and attracted them.

There is insect killer you can spray if it gets really bad.

I told the DH that he needs to investigate. Our yard is tiny- there is nowhere else for the garbage (no garage!). And considering my flip flopped feet are mere inches from the base of that bush when I get in and out of my car- Chat Icon
He needs to take a look.
Not sure if the bush is ours or not.

Definitely not a pet burial site, though- the location is just wrong for that.
Quite possibly a dead stray something.

thousands of flies. thousands. no deal.

I will update everyone on my bush.

exactly what I suggested!
But we aren't sure if it's ours or not. PLus the row of shrubs acts like a barrier between our driveway and the neighbor's.

Eww i can't stop thinking about it. thousands. so nasty.

Re: FLIES!

5 matching posts with MrsNaunie using the word bush. Not nearly enough.

The bush is somehow concealing the death smell.

Make D-Train take care of that shizz.

This is interesting-
I don't know the type. It's got waxy leaves, and little white berry type flowers.
It's big.

What type was yours?

There is not much of an update- if anything, it's worse.
I had to bump thwe bush this morning to get into the car, and they swarmed me. I am not even being sarcastic when I say thousands of flies.

I nagged Victor for a hot second on our morning phone call- he says-
"eww, I'm not going in there- wwhatever is rotting will eventually rot away"

NOT OKAY!

Re: FLIES!

Additionall- we have both agreed on the fact that that whole row of nasty bushes needs to go- I am going to ask my neighbor if they belong to me or her.

Fingers crossed- we can put in a white picket fence with flowers.

Re: FLIES!

if you still want to have some privacy (after bushes have been removed) - you can plant some golden uranomous (sp?) - my aunt and uncle planted these last year, and they've already grown about a foot; makes a great privacy screen. hth

I would totally protest his "ew", what the heck was the point of getting a husband then ?!!?

So I guess asking "whose bush is it anyway?" Is a good plan. But then, who is going to take the fly bush out? Since Victor is fraidy scared of it.

Re: FLIES!

Update:

Victor came home from class last night and realized that he may be to blame.
Apparently, every Wednesday night, when he gets home with his McDonalds, he dumps his soda out in the bush.

I guess because the sink is just too far.

At first, this made sense to me, but...wouldn't the soda just sink into the ground overnight? I don't think it would attract that many flies. JMO.

I think you still need to send him in there with a gas mask Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

When I went to Binghamton, my friends and I rented a house with a big backyard. One day after a keg party, we realized that we had 1/4 keg left over, and not being big drinkers, just dumped it in the backyard before returning it (you have to return the keg empty or they charge you a fee). Forgot all about it... until a week later when you could not step foot in the backyard because the swarm of gnats was so thick you couldn't see through them. They seemed to be hovering over one particular spot and it took us ages to figure out why. We were idiots. Chat Icon Hey, that's what college is for, right? Live and learn!

So yes, soda could be the culprit! Go with that idea so you stop imagining half-decomposed squirrels and go buy yourself a pretty white fence. Chat Icon

Re: FLIES!

Just wanted to let you know, that, yesterday, I was on the side of my house where I have three aborvities. As I was walking by, I kept swatting at flies. When I looked closer, all three bushes had masses of flies in them. Now, I don't keep garbage cans over there and there is nothing buried there. I went into the house and got the only can of pest spray I had which was for ants. It didn't say anything about killing flies, but, since, it did indicate that it killed black widow spiders, I figured I'd give it a shot. I sprayed all the bushes and I haven't seen a single fly since then. I don't know where these things are coming from, but, I am bound and determined to get rid of them.
