Can someone explain to me (in simple terms) what DID happen? My paycheck today was less (roughly $100) than it should be. Did the payroll tax cut expire despite the fiscal cliff deal?
thanks
No deal was actually passed so yes, most Americans will be a lot less starting today.
The payroll tax was always going back up.There was never any deal to prevent that.
I agree. It does suck. But I am thankful my DH are living below our means to cover this new shortfall in our paychecks now. It's not like some friends we know right now who are realizing now that buying expensive homes in expensive areas with increasing taxes and fixed or lower paying incomes was probably a dumb move.

We were worried as it would mean a $14000 increase in our taxes if the bill hadn't passed. We'll still see an increase because of the payroll tax, but not as much.
