first steps of testing
I have just joined this sight in hopes of advice, support and def. some tips with helping with TTC. DH and I will be at our 1 year mark next month of TTC. I had my annual exam with my doctor this month and figured it was about time for DH and I to get checked out. I went for a pelvic sono and everything looks good. I have been using the opks and I get my smileys and all that good stuff. I have to go for some blood work on CD 26 which is this Tuesday. My dr. has given me a script for serum progesterone, thyroid profile, FSH LH & Prolactin tests. DH will eventually give a SA. I told him to wait until I get results from my testing first. (I don't want him to feel pressured) This is all so new to me and so very scary. I have researched on the internet, but is there any info. that some of you ladies can give me since some of you may have been through this? I am hoping that this month will be our month but I now know I have to prepare ourselves that we may need some help. Your words and advice are appreciated

first steps of testing
Good luck! And welcome. :) Depending on your age and circumstances, I'd make an appointment with an RE. There are many options here on long island, and they all work with different insurance companies, etc. An RE will go deeper into their research on why you're not pregnant yet, and they will thoroughly examine DH as well. Many women on here have expressed the feeling that they should have "gone sooner" to the RE. They examine things that have nothing to do with the OB, like FSH levels for you and physiological issues with DH. Who knows? You may get pregnant in the "research" process.

Thats what I am hoping will happen. I just hope that maybe its just been a timing issue with us and maybe this will scare the pregnant into me!!

Def seek an RE!!! They will order an HSG, SA and several other tests. Do not waste your time with an on/gyn... The REs job is to get you pregant and the ob is to keep you pregnant. Good luck!!!

Agree with this! I wasted so much time with my OB and his "testing" and now I am kicking myself.
Make an appointment with an RE and maybe you will have to cancel it because you received a BFP. But if not, the appointment will be there and you can get started!
Good luck to you!!

Re: first steps of testing
Thanks ladies, can you recommend your RE? We live in suffolk but Nassau is ok. This morning my BBT has taken a dip. I'm about 9-10 past ovulation so I'm not sure what thats all about. I'm hoping it will rise again tomorrow. AF is scheduled to come Friday 9/28 but I've had cramps the past 2 days so maybe she is deciding to arrive a few days early...fml..This is only my first month of charting so I don't really have a pattern to go by

Welcome Aboard and Good Luck! TTC can be so stressful but please try not to get too stressed. I myself tried for almost a year to get pg..I have a blocked tube which they were unable to fix so now I am seeing an RE. He is confident that I will get pregnant soon. I see Dr. Halfen at Rsofny. I heard all the Drs there are wonderful!! I hope you get your BFP soon!!!!

I agree with the other posters, but I just wanted to add that I think your DH should go sooner than later to get tested. His SA is not invasive, whereas yours is a lot of blood work and sonos. And his can be done in a day, whereas yours will take a month or more. It might give you a clearer picture of where to start - RE or urologist.
Good luck!

Re: first steps of testing
I don't have much to add bc I'm fairly new on this board as well. Just wanted to wish you luck and hope you get your BFP soon
Also wanted to add, I'm seeing an RE at RSofNY at the West Islip office. Nothing but nice. Staff, Doctors, everything.

Ive been with RSofNY and see Dr.Saketos...been with them since 2007 and LOVE them to pieces...I have my son Thomas (1stIVF) with them and now 18 weeks pregnant (3rd IVF) with them as well...
I wouldnt waste your time taking/charting BBT. If your still going to try on your own while you wait for testing to be done at the RE ...Id start taking CLEAR BLUE EASY digital :) OPK from CD9 until you get a smiley face...Take one between 11am-2pm and another one 12 hours later...(I did 11am/11pm) when you get your :) have sex that day and the 3-4 days following---ONCE a DAY no more than once a day...
Do not waste your time with an OB/GYN office...THE FIRST DAY you get AF, call the RE and make an appointment for CD3 blood and sono as well as a consult and get the ball rolling. When you leave that appointment ask to speak to the dr. get a script for a SA and grab a "goodie bag" for DH... They will most likely do a TON OF BLOODWORK and maybe even an HSG (not there youll have to go to NRAD or somewhere like that)...
Some of the testing that I had was: - Lupus Anticoagulant Antibodies - Anticardiolipin Antibodies - PT and aPTT - MTHFR gene mutation - Progesterone (day 21 of 28-day cycle or 7 days after ovulation) - Thyroid panel - Protein C - Factor V Leiden - Protein S deficiency - Prothrombin gene mutation - Antithrombin III deficiency -D25
this was all done after I was trying for over a year and lost my first baby at 14 weeks...
We also recently (before our 3rd IVF) did an SCSA test...DNA Fragmentation Test for a SA.
GOOD LUCK!!!! Welcome to the board, hope your not here too long...

Thanks!!! He will be going soon! I'm going to ask the lab when I go this week if he can do a drop off as opposed to doing it there!! (nurse that give me script form my dr.'s office said it had to be done there) We live like 3 minutes from the lab LOL. I just want him to feel more comfortable about doing it. I mean he is okay and all but still......

Thanks so much for the detailed post! So question about consult with the RE? DH and I do not need to go together for first visit? The reason i ask is because is AF decides to show this friday, CD 3 would be this Monday and DH will be away!! So my question is, shall I wait until the following cycle when DH is back or shall I just get the ball rolling and go solo and try to get in next week????? And I'm assuming the "goody bag" for DH is a SA kit for home?? :) I thought I initially needed him there but if I don't then maybe I can get this show on the road and he can look though his "goody bag" when he comes back home!
GOOD LUCK!!!! Welcome to the board, hope your not here too long...
