Re: finished basements???
A REA told us on Sunday, if you see a bathroom in a basement there's definitley no CO for it, because it's illegal. This was in Nassau, I don't know if the law differs in Suffolk.

I am pretty sure you can get a bathroom in a basement legally. check with your town about permits.

Re: finished basements???
Alot of people just dont bother to get CO's for bathrooms in the basement because it will cost you more money. But I know in Nassau you definitely CAN get a CO. Tubs arent legal but you can do a standing shower in the bathroom.

Re: finished basements???
I just bought a house in Nassau with a full bath - standing shower - in the basement. I was told we have CO's for everything (though I haven't gone through all the paperwork yet to be sure ). But we had no issues.

Re: finished basements???
We have a bathroom in our basement and there was no CO for it. They say it's very hard (almost impossible) to obtain a CO for a basement bathroom b/c then it makes it sound like its an "illegal apartment" which is so silly b/c there are bathrooms in most basements that I know.
I could care less about it b/c if we decide to ever sell the house down the line, and the new "buyers" want the CO, we can always convert the bathroom into a closet. But, I think for the most part, people wont care.
So, IMO, I'd still build a bathroom in a basement; CO or not. I wouldnt let it stop you.

Re: finished basements???
I have a full bathroom in my basement. I bought the house with it there already. I don't remember there being a CO for it. There was never a problem.
I am in Nassau County.

I'm not totaly 100%, but I think it depends on the type of house. And also I think as long as you put it on plans of the house.
