"Finding the thumb" vs. A Pacifer
I have read a few things that say that "finding the thumb" is better than giving a baby a pacifer and I was wondering why.
I sucked my thumb as a child and it caused me to have to have braces when I was 10 due to that and only that. Whereas my sister used a pacifer and didn't need braces.
I always thought a pacifer was better for that reason.

I've read that the paci is better than the thumb as well.
The only way I would think it's good, is that you don't have to get up in the middle of the night and pop his thumb back in his mouth

I just at that.
I rip DS' fingers out of his mouth when I catch them in there....

pretty much. my aunt supposedly had to have braces due to thumb-sucking however, DD's teeth are straight. if she'd been addicted to a pacifier, i could've just thrown them out when i wanted her to stop...i can't cut her thumbs off.
she's 6 and it's almost impossible to get her to stop...my latest gimmick is "bedtime only." it reduces the number of times i catch her thumb in her mouth.
with DS, we walk around asking him to locate his thumb as he constantly drops or removes the pacifier and then cries over it. now i tell him: if you push it out with your hand, you don't get to cry. he disagrees.

Re: "Finding the thumb" vs. A Pacifer
Both my kids found their thimb after using a paci for the first 3 months. DS stopped sucking his thumb on his own at 16 months old, DD is weaning herself now. I hope. We'll see, I never had a problem with them going to bed once they could suck their thumb.

Yeah, my teeth were straight, but I developed an overbite.

DS is constantly putting his hands in his mouth and trying to get his thumb in there. I pull his hands out b/c I really dont want him to develop the habit. But it is really cute when he does it

DD hasnt been just finding her thumb, she has been finding 4 of her fingers instead and putting them all in her mouth at once. Just worries me that she is going to choke

Re: "Finding the thumb" vs. A Pacifer
As the mom of a serious thumbsucker, pacifier is MUCH better.
She quit for almost 2 months when she went thorugh her "princesses don't suck their thumb" phase, but now it's back with a vengeance.
Not only is it ruining her teeth, I think it affected her speech. Also I can't even imagine that she has any muscles in her left arm since it's stuck in the thumbsucking position at all times.

Re: "Finding the thumb" vs. A Pacifer
I once heard from a physiatrist friend that it shows a form of self soothing. It's a good development skill to be able to soothe yourself.
I do think it's a bad habit thou, my nephew started sucking his thumb at about 4 months but has stopped now at 8 months because she replaces it w/ a pacifier.

Re: "Finding the thumb" vs. A Pacifer
As a dental professional I can tell you an orthodontic pacifier is MUCH better. The thumb will actually distort the teeth coming in around it, affecting the bite and speech. Whereas the correct pacifier will not. I cringe watching my DD suck her thumb , she is a great sleeper though

I always thought the pacifier was better because you could throw it out when they need to give it up whereas a thumb is a much more difficult habit to break.

So the next question would be for the new moms, where would you get an orthodontic pacifier?

My thoughts exactly! DD found her thumb at 2 days old I have always taken it out of her mouth if I see her sucking on it. We only give her the paci in the car and at naptime - and if she does lose it in her sleep, she doesn't really wake up.

Re: "Finding the thumb" vs. A Pacifer
Andrew is still a serious thumb sucker. I tried to get him to take a pacifier, but he never would. He is 28 months and shows no signs of wanting to give it up. It's frustrating b/c like other posters say you can't take away their thumb (unlike the paci)...
