Fetal Echocardiogram
I am schedule to have a fetal echocardiogram in 2.5 weeks, because I have a heart issue and they just want to check out the baby (I'll be 2 days shy of 20 weeks).
Has anyone had a fetal echo? I've had tons of echos on my heart through the years, so I'm familiar with those, just wanted info if anyone has had the fetal echo.
Also, I go for my Level II 4 days later, but am soooo anxious to find out or . Do you think they'd be able to tell me at the fetal echo? I would think they could, since it's like a sono machine, but I could be wrong. Also, I want DH to come with me just in case they can see something, but don't know if that's allowed.
Thanks

Re: Fetal Echocardiogram
It's just like a sonogram, but they only look at the heart. They measure everything and watch to make sure all the valves are working properly. I had to have it done when I was PG as well.

Thanks so much, I was hoping they could tell us, so I'm definitely making sure DH comes with me. I will ask her/him to check the first thing I walk into the office

I'm having it done at Stony Brook University OB-GYNs (think that's the name), in Nesconset I believe. I had a consult with a high-risk Dr. there due to my heart, but they said I could stick to my regular Dr., but I'm going back there for the fetal echo. I go on 2/1.
Who are you going to?

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured would happen, since that's what the regular echo does too. I'm hoping they can scroll down a little bit though and look for or !

I had several done due to one of my boys have a Pulmonary Stenosis, and they should be able to tell the sex. Just let them know to look for it.
I am not sure if it was because my boys were uncooperative, but all of my fetal echos took forever.

Oh, they took a long time? I was wondering about that. I know that when I have my regular echos annually, they're doing the sono for like 30 minutes probably because they look at my aorta, so I know it's not too quick. I'd imagine w/a fetus, it could take longer because they have to look so much closer. Thanks for the heads up!

Re: Fetal Echocardiogram
I had one because my babys heart was skipping beats and I picked up on it with my portable dobbler unit(scariest thing I've ever heard!). It's very similair to a level II which is just a sono that zone in on the heart and they can turn colors to see blood flow. I wish you luck

The woman told me it could take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours or more. She also told me to make sure to eat something so that the baby is active. I have heard that orange juice is good.

That's interesting, they didn't give me any instructions to prepare for it, but my appointment is in the late afternoon, so I'm sure I'll have eaten lots by then

All you ladies that have had this before: did your DH go with you? I want mine to come, especially if we find out the sex, but I didn't know if this was the 'norm'.
Thanks!

Re: Fetal Echocardiogram
I just went for a fetal echocardiogram. It is done the same way a regular sono is only by a pediatric cardiologist. They look at the development of the heart, the blood flow, etc. If the dr. is nice enough, they could definetely tell you if it is a or . Mine gave us a 3D pic of our baby.

My Dh is not coming because he is on an important job, and really cant take any days. My mom is coming with me though. I wanted her there because she knows exactly what my sister had. I would bring him if you can!

Re: Fetal Echocardiogram
Thanks for all the responses & advice
I am definitely going to have DH come with me for it, I think he would think it was interesting anyway, but especially because I want to find out the sex if possible--I will beg the doctor!!!!!
Ok, another question to bother you guys with-- a doctor actually performs the fetal echo, not a sono tech (a tech usually does MY regular, not fetal echo, then I meet with the cardiologist at a later date to go over the results)? And does he/she discuss their findings with you right then, or will they send the reports back to my regular OBGYN, who will then discuss the results at my next appointment? I'm asking not only because I'm curious, but because I go for the fetal echo on 2/1, then have my Level II on 2/5, so it's not much time (as we know, it takes forever to get reports sent from 1 Dr. to another!!!), and I would hope that if a Dr. doesn't do the fetal echo and review with me that day, that they would have the records over in time for my OB to review to discuss with me at my Level II!
Thank you sooooo much ladies!
