Re: Extreme Makeover Home Eidtion
A new girl at work told me that about half of the people that get these houses wind up selling them within the year bc they can't afford the taxes and the higher utility bills. I stopped watching when I heard this. so sad...

I think you're right. I heard that about the house they did in St. James for that father who had 3 kids and his young wife passed from cancer. The taxes were WAY TOO HIGH!!!!!

I live very close to that house, and I think it was up for sale for a while after EMHE. Not sure if they moved though. I'm sure the taxes went up to at least 12k or more in that area.

Re: Extreme Makeover Home Eidtion
i was just having this same discussion with someone else at work... i said you would at least think that they would consider the taxes and utilities when they are planning out the house- he said they really dont care, it is all about TV and the ratings

Re: Extreme Makeover Home Eidtion
I dont mean to sound insensitive, because I honestly do feel for these people, but it seems the new trend on the show is to pay off their mortgage, well, if they have no more mortgage, they might be able to pay off their new taxes and utility bills.
Dh and I were talking about this last week, the family lost their house because they couldnt pay for it, so EM built them a home, with all of these heat sensors, and this crazy ac unit, how are these people going to afford the electric bill?
And another thing that irks me, whenever they do a kids room, they really target it to where the kid is at that point, but what happens in 2-3 years when they totally outgrow the room? Yeah slides are cute in a 5 year olds room, but when the kid is 8, they probably arent going to want it.
They should go back to fixing the house up, not building these monster sized homes.

I agree! I saw one the other day where they just rebuild the existing house. I think this was one of the original episodes. Now they make these houses way to big. I was also thinking about how they build these monster homes in very poor neighborhoods. I'm always wondering if these people get robbed.
The house in St. James is a nice size. They really didn't go overboard at all.

Re: Extreme Makeover Home Eidtion
I guess we will never really know unless its us who they do it for.
Some people's stories are so sad, and if it helps them have their mortgage paid off, then good for them. I cannot imagine having a chronically sick child who I would have to focus on 24-7 to make sure her body temperature does not get too high & kill her. If their house gave her a healthier life & more time to live, then I think it is all totally worth it.

That was such a sad episode. I can't imagine having to live my life like that little girl.

I totally agree, I cant even imagine my child having something like that, and I think its wonderful that they could give them a healthy environment for that child to live in. My problem with what they did was, the house was HUGE, and these people couldnt afford to pay their bills at their old house, how can they possibly afford to keep such a large house at such a cool temp all the time? If they cant afford to pay that bill then what are they going to do?
I am sure people must still make donations to the families after they are touched by their stories..
I really loved the car with the refrigerated console, I couldnt imagine anything better for that family.

I agree---the monster houses are not necessary!
I willnot totally understand it unless I am directly involved..
