Exercise?

Can anyone share what their pregnancy exercise routine is like?

How much exercise were you doing before the pregnancy?

How much are you doing now?

Did you find it hard at any point in your pregnancy, and why?

I was fairly active before getting pregnant. I was riding my bike often, taking zumba classes, and doing light strength training. I had lost over 150 lbs prior to getting pregnant through exercise and weight watchers, and so I went into it determined to exercise all throughout the pregnancy.

Well, the first trimester has been rough and has left me wiped out. Unfortunatley I have not exercised as much as I would have liked to.

I am starting to get some energy back, so I am trying to get back into a routine. I'd love to hear what others are doing! Maybe it will movitate me a bit!

Thanks everyone, for your ideas on this!
Melissa

Re: Exercise?

after BFP, I did ellipitcal, stationary bike and treadmill.. not all at once.. but about 30 to 40 mins a day, and medium intensity.. and I did this about 3 to 5 times a week. At 30 weeks, I took a break, and then when back last week.. I was winded after 15 to 20 mins.

Now I walk.. and when I do excercise, the intensity is slightly less and lessened and cut the time in half. HTH

Re: Exercise?

Wow - 150lbs - that's amazing!! Good for you! Chat Icon

Before getting pg I was running 3-4 miles every other day and doing the elliptical for 1/2 hr on the off days. I sprinkled in some ab work here and there. I was working out 4-5 days per week.

Since getting pg I still run every other day but I had to reduce my speeds alot per Drs orders and I only run about 2 - 2.5 miles now. I do the elliptical on the off days still and I've started to incorporate light strength training just this week (again with Dr's ok).

Still doing 4 - 5 days per week at 18 weeks pg and hoping to keep it up well into my third trimester! Honestly it gets harder with every week but alot of it has to do with how I ate and how much rest I got the night before. I just listen to my body and make adjustments where necessary. For example, once I realized that I just could not do the mileage I was running pre-pg, I instead incorporated some hill work. I also need to change it up often or I get bored.

As long as you are feeling better now and the doctor says ok - you should definitely go for it!! You made so much amazing progress and I know that working out must've become a big part of your life, so don't let it go!

Re: Exercise?

I was doing two spin classes a week and going to the gym for at least an hour on all other days. This was before my june wedding.

AFTER the wedding, we had 2 weeks on the honeymoon=no exercise. AFter we came back, I got super lazy and unmotivated. SO mad at myself because I never got back into the routine before I got pregnant in July. Chat Icon I think it would've definitely kept me in shape for longer if I was going to the gym up until pregnancy.

Grrr, anyway, I still know I want to exercise while I'm pregnant so I've slowly been getting back to the gym a few times a week when I'm not experiencing nausea. I mainly do the elliptical or the cross trainer for 45mins to an hour. I try not to get my heartbeat too high or overexert myself.

Mainly i just want to keep my body accustomed to the routine of the gym so it won't be sooo foreign to me after the baby comes.

There is a VERY pregnant woman at my gym who looks friggin FANTASTIC and she's my motivation!

Re: Exercise?

Thank you everyone for your responses.

I did take a walk with the dog today, and it felt good to be out there. Fall is my favorite time of year to be outside walking and riding my bike. I want to give that time to myself. I am a Mom already of a 6 year old and I babysit a 3 year old full time, M-F 6:30am-5pm, so it is hard to find time. But I've been a Mom long enough to know that you have to make you a priority and I need to make sure that I figure out a way to make that time for myself each day.

I am happy to be walking but what I really want to do is ride my bike! Before the pregnancy I was putting in about 100-120 miles a month on my bike, since April. In March I got in 94 miles =) So really, as soon as it was warm enough to ride, I was out there. I love the trails in Nassau County and miss them.

My doc said that it is fine to keep riding through about 7 months. However, I am so nervous! I generally ride alone and it makes me nervous to be out there on a trail by myself. I know my fellow bikers are always out there too, but I always think...what if I fall and noone is there to help me? It is one thing when you are worried about your own self, but another thign when you are worried about the baby too.

Anyway, it is good to hear what everyone is doing, and I appreciate your comments. Hopefully I'll get over my fear now that I'm past 12 weeks and starting to get some energy back!

Re: Exercise?

Before pregnancy I went to the gym 3-4 times a week. I would do a weight training circuit and at least 30-40 minutes of cardio.

In the first trimester I cut back a bit. I was a little tired and working after school so I was only making it 1-2 times a week. It was then that I thought I was slipping and was going to drop the ball. But I too lost weight (75 lbs.) about 7 years ago and have kept it off. So, I was determined to not let pregnancy stop me.

Since then, I am going 3-4 times a week again and doing the same routine, a little lighter. I will be 31 weeks on Thurs. and still going strong.

I have had a more than fabulous pregnancy and think exercising throughout has played a major role. I feel wonderful, have not gained a ton and am not exhausted at all. It makes me feel great!

Re: Exercise?

Before getting pregnant I was going to a Cardio kickboxing/full body workout type class 4 days a week. If I couldn't make it one day, I would go for a walk/run around the neighborhood.
When I got pregnant M/S hit me at 5 weeks. I also started having issues with the pregnancy. Working out was not an option since I could hardly move off the sofa some days. I was extrememly tired, sick, working overnights and taking care of a 2 year old. I lost 7lbs since I could hardly eat of keep things down.
I'm now just about 14 weeks. I just started feeling better about a week ago. I still have bad days, but nothing like it was. I plan on starting a pre-natal Yoga class and will start walking. I'm taking it easy, but want to do something.

My DH used to tell me about some pregnant women at his old gym that looked ridiculious. He said she had a six pack on top of her pregnant belly. Then after she had baby, he said she didn't even look like she was ever pregnant. I wish!!!

Re: Exercise?

With DC 1, I did elliptical thru my entire pregnancy. Prior to that I was running.

With DC 2, I was a lazy azz and didn't excercise at all. Chat Icon

With this one, I was doing the elliptical. Once the MS goes away, I will start that up again.

Re: Exercise?

Before getting pregnant I was running about 15-20 miles a week and doing light weights at home.

Once I got my BFP I kept running, but alternated running and walking. So 5 min run, then 5 min walk and repeat. And I started exercising by time instead of distance. I continued that through about 30 weeks and then I had to switch to all walking because I was too uncomfortable.

I also did prenatal yoga once a week from the second tri on.

I didn't really keep up with the weights while pregnant.

Funnily enough I found exercising while pregnant much easier than post-partum. I'm finding it really difficult to run now, I'm ridiculously slow and tired. But I'll keep trying and i'm sure slowly but surely I'll get it back.
