Excuse my ignorance....

At what point/what events have to happen in order for a doctor to deem it's time for an IUI?

Re: Excuse my ignorance....

usually if you're trying on your own for a while (also age is a factor here)... then they try you on clomid for 3-6 months (i tried for 3 months- different doses each month: 50,100,150mg) then they decided it was time we move onto an IUI--- however some people have done IUIs with clomid on this board.
My first IUI was the same month as my first round of doing injectibles--- because I dont' ovulate on my own so they gave me a trigger also. HTH!

Re: Excuse my ignorance....

Thanks so much for your response...can anyone point me to a website or something cause I am so confused....I should have asked this instead:

What is the course of action/order of how everything happens...

So far we did HSG (everything is fine), CD3 bloodwork (everything is fine), we tried and messed up the SA so we are trying that again....then what happens next, then after that, etc.....

Re: Excuse my ignorance....

are you seeing an RE or a regular OB/GYN?? Do you have PCOS (or are you trying to find that out?) Have they prescribed any meds from you? How long have you been TTC?

Re: Excuse my ignorance....

People do IUI's for different reasons. We needed IUI because my cervix was stenotic - too narrow of an opening for natural conception. That's why I never needed medication. My cycles were fine.

We have had 9 unsuccessful TTC cycles and I am still only seeing my obgyn. No PCOS as far as I know (would I find that out from the blood test?)
The obgyn told us to do those tests....I think at this point we are waiting to see what happens with DH's next SA before we would have to go to a fertility urologist. I was just wondering what the natural protocol was but I guess there is no such thing.

Thank you everyone!

if I could make a suggestion, if I were you I would make an appointment w/ an RE. Most OB/GYNs will take more time than an RE would to diagnose w/ if there is anything wrong, as well as to perform all of the tests... HTH!

Re: Excuse my ignorance....

I don't ovulate consistently and my RE put me on Metformin in Sept. Right after Xmas I went in for one of my usual sono's and they saw a mature follie (20mm). I took the trigger shot to ensure I would ovulate and the ONLY reason I did the IUI was because we asked if we could. I wanted to do EVERYTHING possible to increase my odds of conceiving and the RE agreed and said it was our decision as to how "aggressive" we wanted to be. The IUI was 100% covered by insurance and it was a quick and painless procedure so we did it and I am now almost 15 wks. pregnant. I wasn't on Clomid and my DH had no SA probs whatsoever so why someone would do an IUI and when is really a decision that is made based on your circumstances and what your RE and you feel is the best course of action at the time. I am SO happy we did the IUI.........I will never know if it was the IUI that got me preggers or all the BD'ing with Pre-Seed but whatever it was it worked!! Lots of luck to you!!!! I TOTALLY agree with you!! The best thing I EVER did was get myself into the RE's office. They were on top of everything!! I was constantly monitored, I got my test results the same day, the doctor always met with me, and 3 months after my first visit I got my BFP!! After going to the RE and having that experience it made me realize that my other doctors were wonderful for the gyno part of it all BUT when it came down to fertility issues they simply did not have the knowledge or experience to really help me. I wasted so much time in the beginning. You have to get to an RE..........you will be SO happy you did!!!

Re: Excuse my ignorance....

IUI's are done for different reasons but most often in conjunction with fertility medications or to help out with mild male factor IF issues. There is such a thing as a natural IUI where you track your own ovulation at home with OPK and go in for an IUI once you surge. Many RE's recommend a combination of ovulation induction drugs (Clomid) and IUI as a starting point for treatment for infertility. HTH!

Wow ladies....thank you so much! It's all very clear to me now! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Once DH does his SA again and we get the results, I am going to ask my obgyn for her fertility urologist reco if we do have a MF issue, if not I will ask her for her RE reco and we will move on from there.
