excess baggage charges!
We went to Seattle and one of the suitcases was 57 pounds. They wanted to charge us $90 for the 7 lbs over!!!
I had to take some shoes out and put them in a plastic bag and carry them on.
Ridiculous!

Re: excess baggage charges!
thats nuts- you are better off using one of those ship ahead services- I have used luggage forward before and they were great and very reasonable- much less than the stupid airlines charge

Re: excess baggage charges!
Wow - I've been charged $25 before for being 2-3 lbs over but $90 is nuts. Sometimes the people are nice and let it slide but, other times they are mean!
DH now weighs everything on our bathroom scale before we go anywhere. We also bought rolling duffle bags since they weigh less than our regular luggage since they are being such sticklers.

Re: excess baggage charges!
airlines are going crazy with charges, a lot of international airlines charge $150.00-$200.00 for excess weight!

I will never understand what the difference is between an extra 7# in the cargo area or in my overhead? It's STILL 7# on the plane.

Re: excess baggage charges!
Delta charged us $15 for the first bag each and then we had another bag that they charged us $25 for. For 7 lbs they wanted $90!
They did let the other bag go through with 1 lb over.
That was real nice of them.
I'm changing my packing mentality.
I'm going light with a carry on and nothing else.
if it doesn't fit then it stays home.
I do need new luggage though. I think the suitcases alone are 10 lbs.

Re: excess baggage charges!
same thing happened to us in Amsterdam. DH's suitcase was over by about 5lbs and they wanted 50 euros! NO WAY! I put his heavy leather jacket in my under-weight suitcase and paid nothing.
some airlines are smoking crack

Re: excess baggage charges!
We were over by 15 lbs but only had one bag between two people. I am now taking more luggage so we will not go over next time. It cost us an extra $50. I think the rule is stupid because now we are taking more bags which will take up more room. On the other hand if I was a baggage handler I would not want to have to lift such heavy luggage.

That's the main reason for the rule - to my knowledge.

Re: excess baggage charges!
that happened to us coming back from Punta Cana.
one suite case was 5 lbs. over and it would have been about $75 more. we had to re-distribute stuff from the bigger suitcase to the smaller one.
i can see why they have the rules. i know now how easy it can be to go over on the weight on the way back cause of souvenirs and stuff!

I know it suckss right now, but they're trying to make up revenue right now. They don't want to jack up flight costs so this is one way of making additional money.

Re: excess baggage charges!
I'm going to Vegas in April. One of the reasons I booked Virgin America is because they let you go up to 70 pounds and don't charge you for the first bag. I wish they went more places.
I'm always an overpacker and the one taking stuff out at the counter. I think I will be ok with 70 pounds but to play it safe I'm bringing suitcases for everyone even my 2 and 4 year old. It will be more work for me but I paid for seats so they are entitled to a suitcase.
