Ew! CVS Pharmacist
So I brought my prescriptions to CVS to get filled. I had the one for the PrimaCare and another for folic acid (stronger than the OTC pills). I gave them to the pharmacist (a grouchy old man) and this is how the dialogue went:
Him - What is this for?
Me: Primacare prenatals
Him: Oh - I had no idea what that said. Why did your doctor give you folic acid as well? The vitamins have more than enough folic acid in them
Me: I have family history of birth defects from lack of folic acid.
Him: Well, you know that you don't really need the folic acid, don't you? You're probably just wasting your money with this one.
Me: I'll be back tomorrow to pick them up.
I'm just annoyed that he questioned the prescriptions that my doctor had given me. Obviously they were prescribed for a reason.
Oh - and to top it all off, I had to YELL to have this guy hear me. It's a good thing I didn't have to get a prescription for a$$ cream filled.

Re: Ew! CVS Pharmacist
Although he shouldn't have asked the way he did and the way he said things wasn't the way he should have handled it, drs don't always know everything. My Dh is a pharmacist and you would be surprised at how many drs screw up and over prescribed or write the wrong thing and the fact that their handwriting is usually unreadable doesn't help. The fact that he asked you those questions is his business to some extent--filling them puts his license on the line and even though your dr wrote them doesn't mean it is the right thing to prescribe all the time. God forbid you were given something that you shouldn't have the dr & the pharmacist could be liable.
My Dh questions patients all the time if he thinks something is weird about the prescription he is filling.
Again I don't think the pharmacist in this case handled it correctly though.

Re: Ew! CVS Pharmacist
I hear you! I've had a pharmacist question my medication once as well. When I had the flu, and she told me if I REALLY had the flu, I wouldn't be standing there at the counter. Excuse me, but I could barely stand and was about to pass out. She gave me a whole ordeal over flu meds and how I really didn't need it. It totally annoyed me.

Re: Ew! CVS Pharmacist
I had a pharmacist make a comment when I was late picking up my BCP. They were on hold for almost 2 weeks (we were trying to decide if we were going to start to ttc). When I finally picked them up she said that she was glad to finally see me, and if I had waited any longer I may have gotten myself in trouble!

totally understand where you're coming from, however, my experience has been that the pharmacists actually know the meds MUCH better than the Drs.

I agree...as the pharmacist questioned something the dr. prescribed as I had an allergy comment on my record & they said, I could get a reaction.

Thank you for clarifying this! I totally understand now that he had to question, but his attitude was all wrong about it. I shouldn't walk away feeling small from dropping off a prescription.

I completely agree with you. Try and find an independent pharmacy you might have better luck. If you live near seaford I know a great pharamcist

Actually, it IS their business what you are getting since they are dispensing the meds - and most of the time the pharmacist is more knowledgable than the doctor about what works best for what, and what can/can not be combined -
He was a little gruff, but I wouldn't automatically dismiss a pharmcist's opinion b/c he's 'not a doctor'

Pharmacists can be held liable for any negligence with dispensing medication. He may not have gone about it the right way, but the pharmacist absolutely has a right to question the prescription.

Correct, the pharmacist can question the prescription...but if you didn't want to give the information of why you needed it, they can simply call the doctor to find out.
Sorry, you had a bad experience with him.

Re: Ew! CVS Pharmacist
Wow the responsibility of the pharmacist is directly related to the medication- the side effect, correct dosage, interactions, when to take, etc...not to comment on what the doctor has prescribed, esp. to comment to the patient! That is so unprofessional!!!
