Euthanized Question

Why is it ok and acceptable to euthanize pets (when the are old and get ill) but people think its uncomprehensable and totally wrong for people?

I don't think its totally wrong or uncomprehnsible, so long as they are competent to make that decision or has a living will which specified the cirucmstances when it should be done.

Re: Euthanized Question

i think because people are "rational animals"as my old science teacher used to call it and because we can make our own decisions and verbalize those decisions.

People have insurance, better access to care and more $$ is spent on trying (even though it doesn't seem that way) to help solve their medical problem then on a animal.

Re: Euthanized Question

I think it's because most humans are trained to respect/protect life as much as possible.

Also in general it's probably more difficult for most humans to let go of a famliy member than it is to let go of a pet. (Not to say that letting go of a pet is easy--as anyone who is a pet-owner can confirm.)

But maybe it's easier to accept that a pet is near death than a human.

Plus I think sometimes it comes down to money too. If you had limited funds you may not be inclined to do all you can to save the life of your aging/sickly pet--whereas that might not even be an issue for your aging/sickly family member.

I'm babbling.

I think if I was terminal with no hope, I'd rather be at peace and let my family move on, and if euthanasia was an option, I would seriously consider it.

Re: Euthanized Question

IMO we should be responisble adults....If you don't want your azz hooked up to keep you alive...HAVE A DNR or assign someone to be your advocate.....

If you can't do that for yourself....YOUR BAD

It's not comparing...it's asking why I don't have the right to do (and I am talking about MYSELF, not making hte decision to pull the plug on someone else....flat out Kavorkeian style) this to myself when as a society we are so flippiant about doing it to animals.

Re: Euthanized Question

People view putting an animal to sleep as an act of kindness and a way to relieve the pain and suffering. Animals cant talk and tell us they hurt or they are sick and in pain. So its up to us to decide. people can convery their feelings and wishes. If someone wants to die, I dont see why anyone should stop them.

That is in some instances the case, but it doesn't explain the millions of well, young animals put to sleep each year because there is no room in shelters.

I wasnt talking about that though - I was only talking about sick animals compared to sick people.

I saved my cat and his 2 siblings from being killed at the shelter. Its a horrible thing that is done. But I was only talking about sick animals.
