Ethnic names - how do you feel about them?
I have always loved them. When talking to a nurse at my OB's office the other day she made it seem like it was the worst thing ever. She kept saying this is America and we should pick names that our children wont be tortured over. Names that can be easily read/pronounced by most people. She is like " Your first generation not off the boat....."
I feel the opposite. I think names that are not as popular in this country but are well known or popular names where we come from are beautiful. It makes the child stand out but not in a strange celebrity made up name kind of way. At least thats what I think

Wow what an opinionated nurse . WOW what baZZ. I think you should name your child whatever you want and that comment is just WT HECK for me !
I like Biblical and traditional names myself, and I certainly do not care what others think . I think there are names that are common , uncommon ,ethnic , and traditional that I like and don't like , but as long as mommy and daddy like it that is all that matters.

That nurse is an idiot don't pay anymore thought to what she said.
There's nothing wrong w ethnic names. I don't have an ethnic name and ppl r constantly spelling it wrong, so there's no guarantee of having an "american" name being spelled right either

That nurse should really mind her own business . I love ethnic names, especially if there's a reason behind it! DH and I are using an ethnic name for our . I'm not going to say the reason for it until she's born, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Name your LO whatever you and your DH love!

Re: Ethnic names - how do you feel about them?
My SIL went with ethnic names that are not common in the states, but very common in Ireland.
To each their own, but that nurse should have kept her mouth shut!

Agreed.
Did she bring this up or did you?
I wouldn't solicit opinions from random people on names. It's bad enough our families can't keep their mouths shut when we tell them we love a name... now a nurse has to get in on the act?

Re: Ethnic names - how do you feel about them?
What an opinionated nurse. I may or may not have had a few choice words, ha. I have an ethnic name, it's easy to say (I think), but you wouldn't say it correctly if you looked at it on a piece of paper. It was a TOTAL pain growing up. I had to correct teachers constantly, but I love my name now. That said I'm picking pretty basic names for my children because it was really difficult to deal with growing up. If I were to choose an ethnic name I would make sure that it's spelled very phonetically. I love the meaning of my name and I love that it represents where my dad is from (Iran).

I never ask people what they think of certain names. I will reveal my baby's name when the baby is born and not a second sooner.
I will definitely have an 'ethnic' name for my baby. Though i was born and raised in the US, my parents are from India and I have an indian name. Therefore, my baby will also have an indian name (an easily pronounceable one!)

Re: Ethnic names - how do you feel about them?
just reading about that nurse having the ba!!s to say that to u got me SO heated. I have a name that is not the easiest to pronounce at 1st becaue it is Greek. But, once someone asks me to say it correctly, they usually respond with "oh how pretty" or something to that extent and then choose to call me by my real name rather than the abbreviation.
Anyhoo.. name ur child whatever u feel, don't let society influence ur decision.

Re: Ethnic names - how do you feel about them?
Thanks everyone for your input!! I don't think she meant to be nasty... she is an older woman ( to put it nicely ) and actually very sweet. She has been my main nurse for awhile ( I have two other children and have been going to this Doctor for awhile)
She asked if we had selected names yet and I mentioned that DH loves very Ethnic names for boys but that we didn't get a very positive reaction from people when they heard it. I never told her the name. I've learned my lesson
I actually posted that because although she was the last person to bring this up, she wasn't the first. Many many many people have had similar reactions when we told them one of the ethnic names we are considering.

I LOVE ethnic names and plan to name DD with an ethnic and spiritual name. That nurse sure was opinionated though! But you know what they say about opinions! ;)

You know the saying , opinions are like A-holes, everyone has them. Certain things however can be handled with a little bit of couth , as to not insult the person. It is this reason I will not tell anyone the name, I don't want the 2 cent opinion . I told one person , and her response was "that's so Irish and you're not " Um ok what does that mean ???? Who cares the origin, if I like it so what !

This is why for baby #2 we aren't telling anyone the name. People can't keep their opinions to themselves. It was an argument over DS name before he was born. I refuse to let that happen again!

My DD has an ethnic name and this baby most likely will too (and maybe not even one that is easy to pronounce on first glance!) My DH is in fact "off the boat" and we want names that represent that. This country is made up of immigrants from all nations and your LO will most likely be far from the only child in his/her class with an ethnic name.

Tell the nurse to just hush! You name your kids whatever you want! My husband and I are both Italian, his paretns are off the boat and speak no English in his house, my parents are much more americanized. We have picked Italian names for our LO if it is a boy or girl. They are meaningful to our families and more importantly to us. My husband's true name is Giuseppe and he loves it and so do I.

ITA with everything....My parents and DHs parents are Sicilian and although speak English, Italian is their first language and is spoken by both of our families. I would rather name my kid an ethnic name that means something to me than something that everyone else would like.
With that said....our Little boy will be Joseph Salvatore or Antonio Salvatore and I love it!

Re: Ethnic names - how do you feel about them?
Where does that nurse get the nerve to say something like that? That is so rude!
She sounds like the nurse at my OB's office. When I called to find out if I could go to the gym she told me "Chill out and find your inner goddess." *** is that? Is that medical advice?
In any event, I like ethnic names...so long as it's not something your child will be tortured with for the rest of their life.

Re: Ethnic names - how do you feel about them?
I have no problem with people who name their kids ethnic names...I do have a problem with people who think they're naming a dog, not a child.
That being said, the names we have picked out are fairly ethnic. We have a very ethnic last name, so we can get away with it. The girl name is very Greek/Italian, and I think the boy's name is very Irish when strung together, even though it's biblical in origin.

Re: Ethnic names - how do you feel about them?
dont let anyone dictate to you how or what you should name your child! I'm actually going opposite and not naming my child a Greek name (I'm greek DH is German) because we fell in love with "Isabelle" I got flamed a couple of times, but you know what- its what WE like and its sticking!
