Ethical Question re: Toy Return... WWYD?
I purchased my boys this jeep from JCP during their huge x-mas sale.
It was missing a part (the front bumper) and the decals came ripped.
I got such a great deal I didn't want to return / exchange because it was no longer available on JCPs website. I was also running pretty close to Christmas & didn't want to have to run around trying to find a replacement jeep. I just figured after the holidays I would contact the company for replacement parts since I was well within the warranty period.
WELL, I called the company today, Kaya Toys, and they told me the parts may take over 4 months to receive, if AT ALL. They are also listed on the BBB with a rating of "F" for failure to fulfill warranty claims.
My boys love the jeep, & honestly I threw out the box already so returning isn't an option
BUT I want the missing part! Metal stake things are sticking out of the front of the jeep right now. It is drivable and works fine, I just worry that if they drove into something or someone with it like that, they could get hurt!
... Now for the ethics question: I found it on overstock (for double what I paid!! ) and am debating if I should order it, take the part I need out of the box, and return it. (eta: the manufacturer is the one that suggested that I do this when I called today).
If you were me, WWYD?

to be perfectly honest if i was going to do what you suggested, i wouldn't let anyone else know it, otherwise you open yourself up to a whole load of criticism

I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of returning the unit to Overstock plus it's the winter time so I'd just wait the 4+ months.

I would wait the 4 months. I would hate for someone else to purchase the one I returned with the missing pieces and have another child disappointed.
Is there any way you can make the part where the piece is missing safe by adding something in the meantime?

I know. Believe me, I don't WANT to do this.
But the manufacturer basically SUGGESTED it to me on the phone.
If their customer service seemed more reliable, I would never consider this, but after my phone call experience today & because they have 4 unresolved warranty claims on the BBB and an "F" rating, I have very little hope.

I have to agree.
Don't you have to pay return shipping? On an item that large I can imagine it being a hassle to return.

I would wait the 4 months...its not that long.
I would never do what you're suggesting of doing on overstock. Two wrongs don't make a right!!

I would not go the Overstock route. Think of the hassle you will cause the next person that buys the Jeep that you ship back to them. I believe in karma... that is all I have to say on that one.
Is your DH handy? Could he make the grill somehow? I have a handy dad so I would ask him to make that his project for the New Year!

It took me 7 hours to assemble this thing. I had to build all of the underpinings of the car. DH is not handy at all. He couldn't even read the instructions.
IF I did the buy & return from Ostock I would probably tell Overstock that the box was missing the front grill.
I am leaning towards NOT ordering it from Overstock because it doesn't seem worth the hassle (& I really do pride myself on being an honest person!)... but I will say that the manufacturer is the one that told me to return and rebuy it when I called today. (I'm assuming so they don't have to deal with the warranty fulfillment issue).

seriously?? wait for the parts for YOUR jeep instead of:
essentially stealing screwing an uninvolved company and taking parts from another innocent child's toy.
or, contact JCP. I would never even consider stealing the parts from another box.

I agree that it is essentially stealing from an uninvolved company. The manufacturer is the one who suggested this to me (well he told me to do it to JCP). Wouldn't Overstock just send the box back to the manufacturer for a refund anyway (much like JCP would do assuming they had more in stock?)?
JCP said they can't really do anything because the item is discontinued. I can return it to them (which I am not doing after 7 hours of assembly and I no longer have the box anyway) or fight it out with the manufacturer.
It is not a matter of waiting for the parts. The company's customer service made it seem like it was probable that they would not arrive. That coupled with the Better Business Complaints makes me think the parts will never make it to my door.

i know what youre saying about the manufacturer telling you to screw overstock, but that is terrible advice. id wait it out for the parts. let the manufacturer deal with the loss.

I would just deal with it w/o the piece. I have purchased items before that people have done what you are thinking about and its so annoying and inconvenient. I also think its bad karma to do something like this

They have an F for a reason... sounds like they are unethical. And maybe the reason why you have no bumper is because someone did the same thing to your jeep? Just wait for the piece.

Re: Ethical Question re: Toy Return... WWYD?
I"ve worked in a few different retail chains.
Items that were returned for being defective or having missing parts were charged back to the manufacturer, not absorbed by the store.
That said, I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of returning it to Overstock. I'd call JCP and see if they can locate another one in a store first.

It's not an essential part. I would wait the 4 months.
Also, i would definitely contact JCP and see if there's anything they can do.

Re: Ethical Question re: Toy Return... WWYD?
I would wait the 4 mths. it works. It doesn't seem like a big deal.
I wouldn't buy from a separate company, take the part, and return. For a number of reasons-unethical, too much of a hassle, not necessary.

Re: Ethical Question re: Toy Return... WWYD?
I would bring it to JCP and tell them. I know that if you do the overstock thing they just return it to the people who makes the jeep and they dont get charged anything. They wont charge you shipping or anything either. I dont think its that big of a deal but I think it will be a huge pain in the butt.
With that said I would call the company back and ask to speak to a supervisor. I would bug them as much as you can until you get it.
