Engineers for home inspection

How much does it cost to have a house inspected when you are buying a new home? Any recommendations for engineers?

DH and I are currently in negotiations for a house in N Bellmore. In order to get the house at the price that we want (or better stated, our maximum offer), we may agree to take the house "as is", with the option of pulling out of the deal if the inspection shows that too much work is needed. I'm going to look at the house after work today to decide if we even want to go that route and risk being out the money from the inspection if we decide not to go through with it.

We really like the house. It's a split on a cul-de-sac, which is very hard to find with our limited budget. It needs updating throughout, but nothing so horrendous that we can't live with for awhile.

Okay, that was a longer-winded post than the simple question that I planned on asking! TIA!

We paid $470 including termite inspection. We used Tauscher Cronacher two times and were immensely pleased with them.

FM me if you'd like their contact info.

ETA - Size of the home had nothing to do with our price. It was a set fee.

What do you mean "as is"? Once you go to contract, regardless of what the engineer said, you take the house as is.

You don't have to ask them to make any repairs and they don't have to agree to make any repairs -- However, you probably want the option of negotiating the price lower based on the engineer's report. I'd say nothing about "as is" right now.

ETA - Make sure you and the seller both know that you'll be getting an engineer's report. "As is" to most people means you're not getting an inspection done (which is a bad idea).

We used Pillar to Post. They charged $450 including termite inspection. They were very thorough. He was there a lot longer than they were supposed to be. But he made sure he finished the job. Google the company...it's the Bill Murphy office.

Bill did two inspections for us and three for my sister. He's a great guy and saved us a lot of money when he found a huge problem and stopped the inspection to tell us.
