Anyone get a radon check in the home inspection before buying?

I saw this on the tv show Buy Me, I think. Has anyone ever had this done during their home inspection?

Should this be something we do in LI home inspections? Any thoughts or knowledge appreciated.

you don't need a radon inspection on LI. There is not enough uranium in the soil to be concerned with it.

Can you explain this a bit more if you know more. Thanks

Can you get a radon check if you really wanted?

I live in NJ and here it is pretty standard to do so. If there is a high level of radon it can be treated.

I'm sure you could have radon testing if you really wanted to. They leave a cannister in the house for a few days then they come back and check to see the levels.

Thanks all! Does anyone know if they do detect it in your home, what then? How can it be remediated, if so?

Sure... Radon is a gas that is produced from the radioactive decay of uranium. Because of the geologic structure of Long Island and the soil on Long Island, there are no measurable amounts of Uranium on Long Island. If there is no uranium, then there can't be any radon.
Upstate NY and NJ do have uranium in the ground and therefore the uranium will break down and possibly release radon into basements and other subsurface structures.
If you want to get a check I am sure you can find someone to do it, but you would be wasting your money.

Here is an article I found from NYT:

I agree, if you live on Long Island, you are wasting your money getting a radon check. For information on radon and a link to a NYS radon map
