Empty home w/drug addicts at night *Another small update*
I apologize - this is a bit long...
We found out last night that our neighbors that moved last week have lost the house. When they came back to get some items they found that the back window was open & drug parephenalia was all over the place They had only been out 2 or 3 days & suspect it's their addict nephew who knew they moved
The neighbor across the street saw strangers going in late one night & alerted us since we have an infant & we're right next door & they may wander into our yard. Of course we'll call the cops if we see anything, but I'm frightened that we may be jumped or robbed or something now...is there anyone we can call or anything we can do before that happens? Is there a way that we can find out the bank that owns the house & alert them? Would they even care? Thanks so much
********* So here's another small update: The cops came by already! I was feeding my son & saw a COPE cop car pull up w/2 cops in it. I saw them walk in the back yard & on the side of the house looking in all of the windows. Unfortunately they were gone before I was finished with him so I didn't get to go speak with them. I'm not sure if the Town or my call to 852-Cops prompted it, but I'm thinking it was the town. Hopefully this gets taken care of quickly
Oh & I found out that the "known addict" (the 1 bringing his friends over) used to live in the house too & has a history of breaking into houses on our block & stealing from his friends

call the police, they will post a sign and call every time you see or hear something. I am sure they can find out who owns the house too. I have a house about 1 mile away where it is abandoned and kids will wander in, no drugs thank goodness but you never know. You have to because when they come "down" and they want more you can be robbed for cash who knows?they can get there while they are there and bust them.

I'm not sure if the bank would care... but I would DEF call the police, especially since you have children. Drugs are crazy and there is no telling what people can do when under the influence. Good Luck!!

Re: Empty home w/drug addicts at night
My friend actually owns an abandoned house - when they evicted the last tenants they destroyed the place and now they don't have the money to fix up the place
Anyway, they had the place boarded up and drug addicts keep breaking in. Everytime they break in she gets in trouble in with the town. She even wrote a letter to the police that if anyone is trespassing to arrest them, but the police don't care, they don't arrest them, and every other week she is in trouble with town code enforcement because there are people inside. It's a ongoing nightmare....

Re: Empty home w/drug addicts at night
of course the bank cares- they normally don't have the right to board up the house until after it goes thru the courts for eviction
just b/c they left- doesn't mean it's at the point yet
but the town has the right to board up the house- call and complain
when you see a house with gray boards- the town boarded it up
regular wood color- the bank

In addition to Police/Town...
What about motion detector lights in your backyard/driveway ? Would be good if it picked up their driveway/backyard too.
Just some piece of mind for you, that if someone is on the property you will know.
Make sure your cars are always locked to. I'm terrible with that and always forget.

Re: Empty home w/drug addicts at night
Thanks everyone
When I went outside before I noticed a window open that wasn't last night, so I panicked & called the town. They said they'd have an inspector on-site within 72 hours to assess the property/the situation and that it should be boarded up asap once they've verified the house is vacant.
The town recommended I call 852-cops & I did, but it was a total waste. The operator was a bit nasty with me & told me that unless I went over there & verified someone was in the house right now that there was nothing she could do & she insinuated that I should have known better than to bother her. I told her the town told me to call & she pretty much said that was stupid of them.
I saw the neighbor on the other side of me this morning & I went over to fill him in on what's going on. He owns a store nearby & knows a lot of the local cops very well because of it so he told me he'd speak with every one that comes in to try & get some extra patrols on the block if possible so that maybe they'd catch something
In the meantime, I love the spotlight idea. I was thinking of that myself earlier once I saw the window on the side of their house open - it faces the side of our house where all of our bedrooms are I'm going to ask my dh to get something setup asap & in the meantime I have the alarm set whenever I'm home now. I'm probably overreacting, but a little alarm in my head is going off like crazy & I just can't ignore it...

No such thing as too careful especially when drugs are involved. I'm disgusted by the response you got from that operator.

it's actually quite normal
I had a house I was selling in farmingville
the first weekend I was there- I met every neighbor and they all said the same thing
they would call the cops on the kids hanging out in the house- and the cops would do nothing
one time they did come- b/c they made a fire- but the cop was more concerned about making a report- then looking for the kids
I found drug bags all over the house

Next time you think someone is over there - call 911 - every cop i know says to not bother with the 852 number and just call 911. In your case - it isnt a far cry from an emergency - its a dangerous situation.
Definately keep your guard up and add extra security if you can - alarm, pepper spray etc
