Emergency room visit
On Sunday afternoon my2 yr. old granddaughter was at my house with my daughter. For lunch I gave her some homemade vegetable soup and a piece of filet mignon that I had left over from the Outback. After that I was making my walnut cups and my daughter figured since she's already had peanut butter several times, she gave her a tiny piece of a walnut figuring if she wanted a walnut cup, she'd at least have had it. She had the tiniest piece then spit it out, don't even think she swallowed it. About an hour later she went in for a nap and after 20 min.began coughing a very loose cough and was very disoriented. Said her throat hurt. When she came out of her room, we noticed her face was very red up to and including her eye lid and her right eye was swollen. We rushed her to the ERDox . By the time we got there she seemed a little better. She was running around and didn't seem to have any breathing problems. She kept us there for 2 hrs. Gave her Benadryl, 2 nebulizer treatments and a steroid shot. She kept saying she "thinks" she hears a tiny bit of wheezing. Once she listened, she heard a tiny bit of wheezing, the next time she listened she didn't hear anything. She kept checking and said if she heard wheezing again she wanted to give her the epi. Her throat was open and she had no swelling of the tongue or lips.. By around 8:30 we took her over to Winthrop just to have them check her out. They said she all clear, no wheezing, no congestion, nothing.. We didn't get home till around 11:30. They said they thought it was an allergic reaction. They gave her a some prescriptions. We are not sure if it was the walnut or the possibility that the filet mignon might have been cooked on the same grill with shellfish. She has to go to the pediatric allergist on mon. to be tested. When we told the pediatrician where we took her first, he said we should have gone straight to the emergency room. When we told him about her wanting to give her the epi, he seemed to feel it was a little drastic due to the fact that she improved by the time we got to ERDox. He hasn't heard good things about that place either. He said to continue Benadryl for the next few days as well as a steroid. He also gave her an inhaler and a script for the epi pen, just in case. Anyway they said to watch her closely and make sure she has NO nuts or anything with nuts of any kind til it's determined what if anything this reaction was from Hopefully we will find out next week what it was. What a scary night.

The female dr. right away wanted to give her an epi shot which would have meant an ambulance ride to the hospital right after. She kept us there for 2 hrs. Gave her 2 nebulizer treatments and a steroid shot. She kept saying she "thinks" she hears a tiny bit of wheezing. Her throat was open and she had no swelling of the tongue or lips. Wait - so you refused the epi shot which would have meant a ride to the hospital, but then decided to take her to the hospital anyway? Sorry if I seem confused. Glad she's ok now!

Re: Emergency room visit & review of ER Dox in Massapequa Park
I have to be honest...I don't think its out of line or strange that they wanted to administer an epi shot right away..what you described is a classic allergic reaction which can be deadly if not treated appropriately. The swollen eye and coughing/redness are all the beginning of anaphylactic shock...
I'm glad she's ok and I'm sorry your overall experience wasn't good...but for me, since I have a kid with a peanut allergy, I guess I just know from dealing with it over the years that those signs are showing an adverse reaction and with little kids who can't always vocalize how they're feeling, we know to give the epi pen if he presents with those symptoms.

You are reviewing the doctor poorly because you refused an epi shot because it required a hospital visit. It sounds like you took a huge risk not giving your grand daughter an epi after she had such a horrible allergic reaction.

I agree. As the Mom of a kid with a nut allergy the circumstances you described warrant an epi shot. I think the Dr was correct to suggest that as you had no idea the extent of her allergies. If this was a severe allergic reaction refusing the shot could have meant death, and an epi shot only buys you 15 minutes to the hospital. As this was her first reaction, and subsequent reactions are always worse, it is important to understand the details of food allergies. I hope you get answers and if you need a rec. for a pediatric allergist let me know, I love my son's Dr.

I agree. Perhaps if the initial recommendation for an epi shot would have been followed your night would have been different.
Most important though, glad to hear your granddaughter is ok!

PM peds is different and it is an awesome place to go when your pedi isn't open.. So much better then the ER. Less likely to be there for hours and they can handle a lot of emergencies.... My pedi said to go there for anything except head/neck injuries... They cater to just kids and there is a pedi on staff the WHOLE time... Been to the one in Syosset a few times and they are great. The local Doc in a Box doesn't always have a pedi on call.

Re: Emergency room visit & review of ER Dox in Massapequa Park
The Dr did everything by the book. Epi is that gold standard treatment for an anaphylactic reaction. Its always best to give that even when your not sure how severe the swelling is. Steroids and nebulizers would be second best.
The reason you should have gone to the ER first is if the worse case happened and your Granddaughter had to be intubated the hospital has more resources. What did the origInal Dr. do wrong?

DS is highly allergic to all nuts. We absolutely would have them give him the epi shot in that situation...that is what its for. We have one in the house and at his school for a situation like this (hopefully it would never come to that). I don't see what the doctor did wrong. G;ad she is better though!

Emergency room visit & review of ER Dox in Massapequa Park
My DD has a peanut allergy. The epi pen could be the difference between life and death for a child. They reacted appropriately, and frankly, you are lucky your granddaughter is okay.

We love Er dox and I agree, as the mother of a son with severe nut allergies, the epi pen is a life saver and they were right in saying you would need an ambulance ride, you always have to call 911 after administering it.

Re: Emergency room visit
Your original post said that the doctor wanted to give the epi right away, upon arrival and now it says that the doctor waited a while and wanted to give it later on if she heard wheezing again...I'm so confused.
At any rate...whatever the case was....never ever refuse an epi, always err on the side of caution. It can't harm her to have the epi!
there are just so many stories of kids who have reactions that sometimes occur hours after exposure...the symptoms can look innocent enough, but its so scary because that wheezing sound (even if its very slight) means airway restriction. So the throat can be slowly closing even if the child appears active and OK.
It's just a really scary thing to go through. Again, I am so happy your granddaughter is OK. Just know that for the future, reactions can and usually are worse. For a first time exposure, she reacted pretty badly. Poor thing!

Which is why I quoted. It seemed to me that this poster was manipulate facts so they could give a negative review when they were the ones who chose not to follow doctors orders.

Glad she's okay.
It sounds to me the doctors did the right thing and if she was having an allergic reaction then it would seem to me the epi pen would be the smartest and quickest way to ensure she was okay.
