Email about masks in school
Just got this from my pediatric office and I thought it was very well stated and I think we need to learn to respect each other's choices regardless...
Dear Patients and Families,
Everyone wants to keep children in school. Approaches differ. The CDC’s recommendation to allow masked children with COVID illness or exposure back to school after five days was great progress. This change was possible because the right mask, when worn properly, is helpful in decreasing COVID transmission.
Mandatory masking in schools is going to end at some point when the science or the courts, or hopefully both, say it should. Some will think it is too soon, for others it cannot be soon enough. Government, school officials, and parents should prepare. Adult behavior will impact children.
Governments and schools should give families sufficient notice of when masking will move to voluntary. Parents and children need time to talk and make decisions. Earlier this week, in the middle of the day, some school districts announced that masks were now optional. This should not happen again.
Parents should start the conversations now that will help children understand why they will or will not continue to wear masks.
Most importantly, parents should talk to children about how to treat other children who make a different choice. Children who wear masks are not “afraid.” Children who don’t wear masks are not “selfish.” Remember that your children are always watching you. Model the behavior you want to see in them. Entertain other viewpoints. Show curiosity. Take responsibility for making your corner of the world better. Teach them to do the same.
Remember that vaccines are the best way to prevent disease, protect yourselves and your community, and keep children in school.

I’m sorry , I don’t have much respect for a pediatric practice who isn’t zealously advocating for getting masks off kids and is so unfamiliar with the relevant data that they believe they make any sort of big difference.

Great letter. Our superindt sent out something similar to our district. They made it very clear they aren't messing around with masks, as they are indeed an added layer of protection.

I love when people still say that... you want to say it keeps you safe, prevents severe illness, hospitalization etc...fine.
Don't lie and say it "stops the spread ". You lose me right there when I see that.
This winter every vaxed person I know had Covid...and spread it to others.
But yeah, let's keep pretending it's the way to stop the spread.

I personally thought it was a great letter minus the last sentence. The message is absolutely true. It's time for the adults to start acting like adults and teach the children to be respectful of other's choices. What was going on in schools with the masks last week was something out of the Lord of the Flies.

I agree. I cringed with the last sentence. But everything else was nicely said.

Haven't heard about other vaccines but you could be right. I would think though, that if the entire email is about covid, they are specifically speaking of the covid vaccine.

Especially when it is spreading through the vaccinated when it was originally stated that if you took the vaccine the spread would lessen and go away.

I didn't want to say that as I am wrong because MY experience usually doesn't count on this board but ITA. That would be for the newborn/infant crowd which is eliminated from the mask mandate.

This letter made me roll my eyes. I received it too and right at the top of the letter it says 5 days….my kids school just started the 5 day rule, yet my pediatrician office won’t see them that early to give clearance notes that the school is requiring for them to return…they are still waiting until day 10 for my younger dd and let me make the appointment for my older dd on the same day even though her + was a few days later because she is asymptomatic.

I am so sorry, you have had quite a frustrating month. I have a friend who's in the same boat - their kid went to school 2x this month and due to exposures and such.
The clearance is BS.
To the original post - it is definitely meaning this vaccine as everyone in schools in NY must be vaccinated for almost everything else to attend school.
But for the rest of the email - I feel it's very well written and it is something that needs to be discussed. I don't think the decision to remove masks was made anywhere mid-day BUT... I have heard that once kids saw some of their classmates unmasked that Tuesday, they too wanted to take their masks off which was not what their parents wanted. So it is important to have a discussion about choice - but in that discussion - you shouldn't say anything like Suzy can be unmasked because her parents don't care about her.

My kids are 100% vaccinated less the Gardasil and COVID vaccine. I'm still just so hesitant to give them either.

I had an issue with this. Are we following science or not? The courts should make a ruling based on science. Something about courts deciding rubs me the wrong way. There shouldn’t be an OR in that statement.

We also don't know 100% how the virus would affect you with or without the vaccine. My friends, whom we had dinner with, in close contact, both tested positive 2 days after we saw them. Husband vaccinated and wife not. Both had the EXACT same symptoms and they were not a cold. They didn't even feel 100% for weeks. Now, could he have had it worse if he wasn't vaccinated? Maybe, but who really knows? My other vaccinated friends have been in bed too sick.

Exactly the line in the email says it prevents disease insinuating that this vaccine will prevent it which we know it does not. This is an email about masks and masks are being worn because of Covid, so if they mean general vaccines and not Covid vaccine the following line shouldn’t have been in the email. The Covid vaccine doesn’t protect your community from the spread and it doesn’t stop quarantines. Maybe only for vaccinated people and that’s because of the baseless non scientific rule according to the CDC.
They are clearly using word vomit to protect themselves but also put it in peoples head to vaccinate. It’s marketing and word manipulation.
Remember that vaccines are the best way to prevent disease, protect yourselves and your community, and keep children in school.

Funny as I listen to a Caribbean radio station that they are up to date with all the covid numbers and vaccinations and they have a commercial which is so misleading. I don't know if it is old and they just play it or they truly believe it but the woman says, the vaccine will prevent the spread of covid. I am always like, no honey, it does not.
