Re: Elmont

Elmont is not too desireable IMO.

Elmont itself isn't the WORST area you can find. But its surrounded by so many bad areas that are much worse.

I agree. Whenever I watch Channel 12 news there seem to be a lot of stories about crime in that area.

Actually the area near the bridal shop is the nice part. Its the part near Belmont Race Track thats the shady part.

My parent's frist house was Valley Stream but on the border of Elmont. They sold in 1974 because as my father said "the neighborhood was going down the tubes". That's over 30 years ago.

Elmont... no thanks!!

I lived in Elmont until 1978 when we moved to Smithtown. My parents said the same reason why we moved. I was only 5 so I dont' remember much!

Everyone is bashing elmont... Has anyone lived here recently... Granted the neighborhood has just recently gotton alittle worse but I wouldnt say it was the worst town out there.... Granted the part by the racetrack is really bad but there are still some good areas as well.... Just like Floral Park, Franklin Square, Massapequa, ect.... So think before you speak please I have lived here for 29 years and it has been lovely. And the school district is not that bad ... you have some good ones and some bad ones... Sewanhaka and Elmont --- BAD but Floral Park , NHP and Carey are very good....

i had a best friend that lived there and her parents moved here. For the same reason others have explained... My moms friend lives there.. They even say its a bad area...

and whats wrong with massapequa? I havent heard any bad things about franklin square or floral park either? Are they bad areas?

I had a friend that lived there about 10 years ago and another co-worker who lives there now.
My friend who lived there 10 years ago..hated it and couldnt wait to leave...

My co-worker is looking to move as well..

This is where i got my info from.
IMO no not all towns have their good and bad areas but a lot do. Each person had to weigh what they feel is of priority to them. People are just giving their opinions.

Re: Elmont

There is a small section of Elmont that goes to Valley Stream schools (North and Central). That very small area is 'ok'. I know a lot of people who are still there, although I don't know how many are moving in. North Valley Stream (across Dutch Broadway) is still nice. That's also split between Central and North high schools - maybe tell her to look there (south side of Dutch Broadway, between Franklin Ave and Fletcher Ave).

Re: Elmont

My best friend rented an apt. in a house in Elmont on the border of Floral Park and it was really nice over there. I think the HS school is Sewanaka which isnt the worst school in the world. I also had a friend who lived across from the racetrack and I was not allowed to walk there alone and there were literally crack vials in the streets. I dont know about other towns but the difference between these two sides of the same town are crazy.

Actually hubby's parents moved out within the last two years. After three robberies on the block within a month, a shoot out with cops on the corner, some lady being dragged down the block by her ex-husband's car, and the neighbor's cars being constantly broken into, it was time to to. There was forever an incident in their "area" if you want to call it and they weren't in the immediate area by Belmont Racetrack. They lived down the block from Rietta's lampshade store. It definitely changed from bad to worse even from when I started dating him.

Re: Elmont

I grew up in Massapequa Park area!! I never heard it called bad before....but yes, East Massapequa isnt as nice - and technically its really Amityville (the schools are mostly Amityville - realtors like to call it E Massapequa to get the better name but even so its not THAT bad)...some parts of Amityville are beautiful also....esp by the water.

On to Elmont, my grandfather lived in Queens Village on the border of Elmont/Valley Stream and when I was little I remember it being nice, it went thru many changes according to my parents, but I heard that many areas are nice again...my greataunt lived in Elmont/VS area - I thought her block was nice but that was a long time ago....

My point being is that there is good and bad areas in every town....

not necessarily true either. i was in Belle Terre recently...and they have their little 'town' very secure...they have their own police!!! Chat Icon

Nissequogue is another town where I don't think you could find a 'bad' area. but i guess areas like these (Chat Icon Chat Icon ) are the exception.

I agree- having grown up in Levittown, I can tell you that it's incredibly homogeneous in SO many ways. There might be a random block where maybe some of the houses are not so nice, but there's no bad "area".
